Four-time Korean Olympian Kim Seo-Yeong highlighted the action on the opening day of the Canadian SC Championships in Sherbrooke, picking up a pair of individual victories.

Kim, a 31-year-old who has been training at the University of Toronto in 2025, has represented South Korea at four straight Olympics, from London in 2012 through to Paris last summer.

She opened the meet by claiming the women’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:58.72, opening up a big lead early and then holding off runner-up Katrina Bellio (1:59.47), who returned to competition in May after nearly two years away due to shoulder injuries.

Kim’s best time in the 200 free stands at 1:57.94, set in 2017, while she has been as fast as 1:59.65 in the long course pool, done at the 2022 World Championships. Bellio owns a PB of 1:56.00, set in 2021.

Later in the session, Kim secured a narrow victory in the women’s 100 IM, clocking 1:00.81 to come within a second and a half of her Korean Record set last year (59.39).

Sixteen-year-old Rowyn Biffart was the runner-up in 1:01.00, knocking three seconds off her personal best time to become the fastest 16-year-old in Canadian history, overtaking Halle West‘s mark of 1:01.06 set last November, and move into 5th all-time in the Canadian girls’ 15-17 age group.

Biffart, an ASU commit who represents the Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club, also set a new Alberta Provincial Record for 16-year-old girls.

On the men’s side, one of the highlights of the day came in the 100 backstroke, where three swimmers broke 52 seconds.

Toronto Swim Club’s Andrew Herman powered to victory in a time of 51.35, lowering his lifetime best of 51.49 set at the U SPORTS Championships in February while topping former National Record holder Javier Acevedo.

Acevedo, 27, was the runner-up in 51.85, just over two seconds off his PB and former Canadian Record of 49.71. Acevedo did not compete at the Canadian Swimming Trials in June.

Also going sub-52 was CNQ’s William Jacques, who shattered his personal best from the prelims (52.60) in 51.91, breaking the Quebec Provincial Record of 51.95 set by Loic St-Martin in 2018.

We also saw a few Provincial Records fall in the men’s 100 IM, which was won by Blake Tierney, fresh off his impressive performance at the World Championships.

Tierney topped the final in 53.30, marking a new Saskatchewan Record to move him into 4th all-time in Canada.

Cole Pratt was the runner-up in 54.24, having set a new Alberta Record of 53.92 in the prelims, which now ranks him 9th all-time in Canada.

The 100 IM was Pratt’s second final of the night, having kicked things off by winning the men’s 200 free in a time of 1:46.04, just shy of his best time (1:45.95) set in December. Pointe-Claire’s Zachary Parise (1:46.70) was the runner-up, knocking 12 one-hundredths off his lifetime best.

OTHER DAY 1 WINNERS

  • Island Swim Club’s Bridget Burton won the women’s 100 back in 59.04, having set a best time of 58.64 back in November at the Canada West Championships.
  • CAMO’s Charlotte Brousseau sliced three-tenths off her lifetime best to win the women’s 200 fly in 2:12.25, while Maria-Theoni Karagiannis also dropped three-tenths to place 2nd in 2:13.15.
  • Just a few weeks after placing 4th in the event at the World University Games, Benjamin Loewen used a sub-30 closing 50 to win the men’s 200 fly in 1:56.51, pulling away from Sebastien Voicu (1:58.10) down the stretch. Loewen set his best time of 1:54.46 at U SPORTS in March.
  • Reigning Division II NCAA champion Tori Meklensek (16:38.68) edged out Toronto Swim Club’s Mia Thomas (16:39.10) to win the women’s 1500 freestyle, with Meklensek knocking nearly 30 seconds off her best time (with this only being her second-ever SCM 1500). She was the runner-up at the Canadian Trials in June, clocking 16:48.39 in long course. Thomas’ previous best stood at 16:56.16, set in December.
  • Pointe-Claire’s Hugo Janvier dropped more than 18 seconds from his seed to top the men’s 800 free in 7:53.17, holding off a late push from Sebastian Paulins (7:53.64). Janvier was entered with his LC best time of 8:11.89, while his fastest SCM swim on record was previously 8:20.84.
  • CAMO won the mixed 4×100 medley relay in 3:50.46 over Pointe-Claire (3:50.65), while Cascade Swim Club (3:52.94) rounded out the podium. Both the CAMO and Cascade performances marked new Provincial Records for Quebec and Alberta, respectively.
