The final day of action unfolded from the 2025 Russian Short Course Nationals taking place in Kazan.

Yesterday Daria Klepikova pulled off the mild upset over national record holder Arina Surkova in the women’s 100m butterfly.

Today, their roles were reversed in the 50m free, with Surkova winding atop the podium in a time of 23.87.

Klepikova was a fingernail behind, touching in 23.88 to settle for silver while Alina Gaifutdinova bagged the bronze in 24.10.

Surkova’s effort this evening was within striking distance of her best-ever outing of 23.69 produced in the semi-finals at last year’s World Championships. Klepikova’s 23.88, however, checks in as her first time under the 24-second barrier. Entering this competition, Klepikova’s PB rested at the 24.35 logged in 2023.

The men’s 50m free saw on-fire 21-year-old Egor Kornev get it done for gold, beating his peers by over half a second.

St. Petersburg’s Kornev stopped the clock at 20.51 as the sole competitor to clear the 21-second barrier.

Behind him was Aleksandr Nazarenko who posted 21.10. Daniil Kosenkov rounded out the podium in 21.16.

Kornev ranks #2 in the world on the season.

The women’s 50m breast brought an upset, as 18-year-old Ralina Giliazova beat both Yuliya Efimova and Evgenia Chikunova on her way to gold.

Establishing a new Russian Junior Record, Giliazova stopped the clock at a swift 29.62.

Efimova settled for silver in 29.91 and Chikunova reaped bronze in 29.98.

Kirill Prigoda crushed a time of 25.55 to get his hand on the wall first in the men’s edition of the 50m breast.

Prigoda’s time positions him as the 2nd-best performer in the world this season, sitting only behind Dutch ace Caspar Corbeau and his time of 25.52 logged at the World Cup.

Oleg Kostin touched in 25.76 to secure silver and Danil Semianinov hit 26.21 as the bronze medalist.

Additional Notes

  • Milana Stepanova was too quick to catch in the women’s 200m backstroke, registering a time of 2:04.28. That’s a new lifetime best, replacing the 2:0462 from prelims in Budapest last year. Tonight, Renata Gainulina secured silver in 2:06.18 followed by Daia Zarubenkova who touched in 2:06.24 for bronze.
  • Daria Surushkina was the women’s 200m freestyle winner, turning in a time of 1:56.46. That held off newly-minted European Junior recordholder in the 1500m free, Ksenia Misharina who logged 1:56.80. Anastasia Saratova put up 1:57.79 for 3rd place.
  • The men’s 200m free saw Nikolay Kolesnikov clock 1:42.35 for the gold, holding off Daniil Shatalov who was also under the 1:43 barrier in 1:42.92. Vladislav Reznichenko touched in 1:43.10 as the bronze medalist.

The relay was crazy…
Kolesnikov led the Moscow team with 48.59, just 0.01 seconds off the national record.
Kirill Prigoda had a stellar split of 54.90 and a reaction time of 0.00 (also 0.00 in mixed 4×50 medley & +0.02 in mixed 4×100 medley).
The combination of fastest times in each split would break the world record in 3:18.45 even with only 45.69 anchor leg from Kornev. Lifintsev seemed to be off form in this meet.
Also the gap between men and women is insane, when I look at swimcloud, there’s over 50 swims that have 900+ WA points (even without Borodin & Minakov) compared to 3 in the women’s (Chikunova & Surkova)

Russia has always been stacked on the men’s side to be fair, even more so in the last two years or so

He also split 54.90 in the medley relay. Quite possibly the best relay Breaststroker at the moment.
