Key Quotes From Japanese Swimmers At Olympic Trials

The 2016 Japan Swim, which served as the nation’s Olympic Trials, wrapped up today in Tokyo, defining the Japanese roster for this summer’s Games in Rio.

Among the swimmers who earned their Olympic berths, were veteran Rie Kaneto, backstrokers Ryosuke Irie and Masaki Kaneko, as well as multi-event star Kosuke Hagino.

Below are some abbreviated interviews after individual races, giving insight into where these athletes’ mindsets are at competing against the best domestic talent and tough Japanese Olympic qualifying standards.

Rie Kaneto: “Hi everyone, this is Rie Kaneto, I am the representative for Rio. Even though we are young ( or inexperienced), we will make sure we don’t lose. We will try hard. Thank you!”

Ryosuke Irie: “It’s been decided that I am going to swim the 200m at Rio. I am happy for this opportunity. This is my 10th victory in this event against many people. I won’t be able to compete with this time in Rio and I will do my best in the summer to cut some time off of it. Thank you!”

Masaki Kaneko: “This is Masaki Kaneko of YURAS.  I felt in the beginning that I would be able to advance, … in the end I was able to make it to Rio.  Along with Irie we will make sure to work hard on our way to Rio.”

Kosuke Hagino:  “I was not able to get the Japanese record for the 200m… I had a choice between the 400 and the 200 for Rio and in the end I chose to race the 200. Tonight we also had 4 people qualify for Rio in the 800 relay. We will work hard to make sure we win.”

Rie Kaneto may have been a teen sensation in Beijing 2008 but now she would be better defined as a veteran among those qualified for Rio, with her 27 years of age. Teen sensation is Rikako Ikee!
