Katinka Hosszu Breaks 4th World Record in 5 Days, Repeats Hacking of 200 IM Mark

Katinka Hosszu has mastered the “World Record game” at this year’s FINA World Cup series, breaking her 4th record and thereby picking up her 4th check for $10,000 over just three days of competition in the last week.

The latest came in finals on the first day of the 2014 Dubai World Cup, where she swam a 2:02.13. That broke her own record set just four days ago in Doha of 2:02.61.

The comparative splits between her World Record coming into this week, her World Record in Doha, and her World Record in Dubai:

Hosszu Old World Record: 26.69 / 30.89 / 36.23 / 29.39 = 2:03.20
Hosszu Doha World Record: 26.94 / 30.27 / 36.33 / 29.07 = 2:02.61
Hosszu Dubai World Record: 26.84 / 30.01 / 36.33 / 28.95 = 2:02.13

Hosszu didn’t really make a big leap on any one leg of her swim, and her breaststroke split was actually identical. The difference between Hosszu and many World Record breakers we see is that often times, swimmers will break a record and then press for improvements, which can result in slower times. Hosszu, however, has shown this knack to just take another step, and another step, and another step.

The Hungarian now has the four fastest times in history in this event, and has broken the World Record four consecutive times without anyone else intervening in her chain of dominance.

If I were her, I would not swim the 200 IM in the next stops and focus to break WRs in 200 back and 200 free which fall on the same day. She’s within 1 second of both events WRs.
I’d also focus to break the 100 back WR as well and drop 400 IM.
That way, she’ll get a lot more money as well as possession of several other WRs than IM, which will cement her position as the greatest ever SCM swimmers
