The USD swim team took fourth place in the USD Shootout Saturday morning at the SportsCenter Pool. Kansas finished in first with 53 points and was followed by North Texas (28 points), Colorado State (27 points), and the Toreros (16 points).

The meet followed the eliminator format in the 50 yard events, with two swimmers from each school advancing to the semi-finals, and just one to the finals. Scoring for these events was 5-3-1.

Sophomore Danielle Taylor led the Toreros by making it to the finals in the 50 fly and the 50 free. Taylor took first in the prelims (26.36) and semi’s of the 50 fly (26.25), before taking second in the finals (25.92). Despite posting her best time of the day, Taylor was 0.01 seconds off Kansas’ Pia Pavlic (25.91) for first place. Taylor’s time of 24.64 earned her third place in the 50 free.

The Toreros’ other finalists in the 50 yard events were Missy Beall (50 back) and Danielle Deiparine (50 breast). Both Beall (28.59) and Deiparine (31.58) took fourth place in the finals.

Gwen Walter took third place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:38.91 to earn USD four points. Sam Terranova came in sixth (10:53.38)

Mackenna Briggs scored two points for USD in the 200 free with a fifth place finish (1:56.20). Walter finished in eighth (1:59.21).

Briggs was also the top Torero finisher in the 200 IM, earning USD another two points (4th place; 2:10.81).

The Toreros closed out the meet with a strong showing in the 400 free relay. Deiparine, Walter, Briggs, and Alex Hubel finished in 3:31.80, good for second place and four points.

The Toreros return to the pool on Friday when they host Fresno State at noon.
