Jamaican Swimmer Lia Forrester Given One-Year Ban for Doping Violation

Jamaican swimmer Lia Forrester, 21,  has been handed a one-year ban following the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) determining that Forrester committed a doping violation, which involved the stimulant ephedrine, typically used to treat low blood pressure.

The ban was reduced to one year, rather than a possible two years.

According to a report from Radio Jamaica News, Forrester tested positive at the Walter Rodgers Swim Meet in Kingston on February 19.

JADCO classified the breach as “serious”, though Forrester admitted the violation early and waived her right to a hearing, which ultimately led to her suspension being reduced in length.

In a post on X from Kayon Raynor, her attorney, Sayeed Bernard, said that the defense is “happy” and that, knowing what she could have received as a penalty, they are “grateful and thankful that the matter has played out how it has.”

Forrester’s ruling also noted that there was “no finding of significant fault or intention” and that Forrester was “deemed negligent” for failing to properly research the medication she used, as reported by Radio Jamaica News.

The suspension began on March 16, the date that her provisional suspension was imposed. According to sources close to Radio Jamaica Sports, the substance was “inadvertently consumed” via an over-the-counter flu medicine.

This is not the first time that a swimmer has tested positive for ephedrine; in 2024, Serbian Olympian Uros Nikolic received a similar one-year ban after testing positive for the substance at the World Championships in Doha. In 2014, Egyptian swimmer Norhan Naser Salah tested positive for ephedrine and was handed a two-year suspension. In 1972, US Olympian Rick DeMont won the 400 freestyle gold medal in Munich, but following his victory, he was stripped of the medal because the substance was present in his asthma medication.

At that meet where Forrester tested positive for ephedrine, she swam to three long-course backstroke wins, touching in 30.84 in the 50 back, 1:09.51 in the 100 back, and 2:33.93 in the 200 back.
