Iowa State Earns Two Road Wins Over South Dakota State and South Dakota in Two Day Road Trip

The Cyclones of Iowa State took care of business in the state of South Dakota this past weekend, claiming a pair of dual meet wins; toppling South Dakota State in Brookings on Thursday, then South Dakota on Friday in Vermillion.

The Iowa State women opened up a two-meet road trip in Brookings against the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State, with the Cyclones coming out on top by a score of 180-115.

Iowa State opened up their win total in Brookings with a near full second victory in the 200 medley relay; the team of Emma Kuhn (27.37), Anja Peck (29.49), Kendall Mallers (25.76), and Grace Swoboda (23.88) combined for a final time of 1:46.50.

Freshman Carlotta Gazzola picked up two distance wins for the Cyclones, first in the 1650 freestyle, clocking 17:24.79, over 23 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. She later won the 500 free, finishing 16 seconds faster than the next fastest performer in 5:08.32.

Cyclone sophomore Lili Neisser doubled up on backstroke wins, clocking 57.55 in the 100 back, later taking the 200 back in 2:06.39.

Iowa State also was victorious in both breaststroke races; sophomore Anja Peck dominated the field early in the 100 breast in 1:04.29, her freshman Cyclone teammate Matildie Geromin later picked up the 200 breast in 2:18.78, nearly eight seconds faster than any Jackrabbit performer in the event.

Freshman Kendall Mallers continued to pack on the scoring for Iowa State, sweeping both the 100 fly (58.61) and 200 fly (2:08.86).

Swoboda, the Iowa State sophomore, earned an individual win in the 100 free, clocking 52.70, just off of her best from the week prior against Illinois of 52.31.

Peck later took a two and a half second win in the 200 IM, clocking 2:10.34, just off of her season best of 2:09.22 from last weekend against Illinois.

The Cyclone women finished 1-2 on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, with Maggie Bendell totaling 284.93 and teammate Katherine Mitchell tallying a score of 277.50 on 1-meter. The two flipped placements on 3-meter, with Mitchell totaling 295.50 to take the top spot, followed by Bendell at 270.68.

Iowa State closed out its victory in the 400 free relay, clocking 3:31.49, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of South Dakota State.

The Jackrabbits’ first event win came from junior Gigi Hioki in the 200 free in 1:54.87. A little over a second slower than her 1:53.62 from a tri meet against Nebraska and Omaha in early October.

Senior Jenna Currier picked up the other South Dakota State win in the 50 free, clocking 24.44. Courrier did notch a new season best in the 100 free, leading off the 400 free relay for the Jackrabbits in 54.14.

The Cyclones picked up right where they left off in the Mount Rushmore State the following day, clocking a full two-second win in the 400 medley relay in Vermillion, clocking 3:54.69.

Gazzola won her third distance crown of the weekend, claiming an early meet win in the 1000 free for Iowa State, in a near 15-second winning margin, clocking 10:27.29, four seconds off of her best time from their meet with Illinois last weekend of 10:23.29. Gazzola commanded the 500 free for the second day in a row, clocking a nearly identical time of 5:08.30.

Neisser swam a third of a second faster in Vermillion in the 100 back, clocking 57.22, almost half a second over the field. Sophomore Madi Dohrn topped the 200 back times for the Cyclones in 2:07.50

Iowa State swept the top three spots in the 100 breast, with Peck (1:04.85), Swoboda (1:05.15), and Gerimun (1:05.58) finishing comfortably ahead of the Coyotes of South Dakota. Peck then picked up the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.53.

Mallers also notched another pair of fly wins for Iowa State, sweeping both the 100 fly (57.97) and 200 fly (2:07.97)–both faster than she was just a day earlier against South Dakota State.

Iowa State freshman Piper Hagan was victorious in the 100 free in Vermillion, clocking 54.22, slower than her season-best time from the day prior of 53.75.

Iowa State junior Emma Kuhn was unbothered in the 200 IM, winning by over five seconds in a season-best effort of 2:06.56.

The Cyclones wrapped up the trip with a half-second win in the 200 free relay, clocking 1:37.90.

The Coyotes managed to still pick up two of the event wins against Iowa State.

South Dakota junior Gabbie Ahrendt narrowly took the 200 free in a season-best time of 1:54.96, just outdueling Corinne Guist of Iowa State by seven hundredths of a second.

Coyote freshman Henley Hatzung touched first in the 50 free in 24.35. Just off of her season best from earlier this month against Minnesota and Nebraska of 23.91.
