Indian Swim Coach Sentenced To Life In Prison For Attempted Murder and Robbery of Minor

An Indian swim coach was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday after being convicted of the attempted murder of a former student.

Sandeep Sahu was sentenced for attempting to murder a minor and committing robbery back in 2015 in Chitpur, a neighborhood located in West Bengal, Indiana.

Sahu was sentenced one day after a Sealdah court convicted him of the charges.

According to the prosecution, on March 18, 2015, Sahu, who knew the girls’ family well through the local swimming center, allegedly knew she would be home alone and broke in. He allegedly took a set of keys from the girl, opening a cupboard and beginning to steal jewellery.

When she attempted to stop him, he tried to strangle her, threw her on a bed, and slit her throat with a knife, according to The Times of India.

According to The Telegraph – India, the victim was initially unable to speak and her injuries were mistaken for a suicide attempt. However, she was later able to detail what happened and identify Shaw by documenting everything in writing.

On Friday, the judge told Shaw he had taken advantage of the victim being alone at home, tried to strangulate her with a towel and then used a kitchen knife to slit her throat. He then stole three necklaces and four bracelets.

“You have been found guilty of the offence of attempt to murder, and you may face up to a life sentence for this offence,” the judge said on Friday.
