Ilya Kharun won the men’s 200 fly final by more than a second, but he did not lead through the whole race. He started the race more than a second behind Noe Ponti, who was more than three tenths under World Record pace at the halfway mark.

Kharun turned in 52.36 to sit in 2nd behind Ponti’s 51.04, but he had an electric final 100, splitting 56.10 to not only pass the Swiss swimmer, but also break the US Open and World Cup Record in the process.

With that swim, he will keep his Triple Crown hopes alive as he will look to win the event in Toronto to take home the $10,000 bonus.

He broke Daiya Seto‘s US Open record of 1:48.77 from 2019, and he took down Chad le Clos‘s 12-year-old World Cup Record of 1:48.56 by a tenth of a second. He was just off his best time in the event of 1:48.24 from the SC World Championships in December.

Great closing 50 for Kharun! Wow! It seems like he really has been putting more training focus on this race this year. Great to see!

In the interviews afterwards I definitely laughed when Ponti muttered “I hate the 2 fly”. Good for him for attempting it, though. I also liked seeing how Kharun wasn’t rattled by Ponti’s strategy to go out so fast.
