George Mason Hires Emma Phillips as New Assistant

George Mason University out of the Division I A10 Conference, has hired Emma Phillips as the new assistant with the men’s and women’s swim teams, where she will work with the middle-distance and distance groups, as well as take a leading role in women’s recruiting.

The role will be coupled with coaching the senior prep and junior gold morning practices of the local Mason Makos club team.

“I swam (Division III) and coached (Division III) and felt that I wanted experience outside of (Division III),” Phillips said about why this was the right opportunity for her.

Phillips has spent the last two years as an assistant with Greensboro College and the last four years coach the STARS Swim Team in North Carolina.

Phillips is still a very young coach, despite her four years of experience at STAR Aquatics. She didn’t complete her college swimming career until 2012, where she was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year for Greensboro College. That senior season included a new conference record in the 200 IM of 2:09.62.

The George Mason women finished 4th out of 10 teams at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships, and the George Mason men finished 3rd out of 7 teams at the same.

“Emma is a great addition to our program and completes our staff,” George Mason head coach Peter Ward said. “She has spent  the  last 6  years swimming for and working with  former Mason assistant Scot Budde at  Greensboro College so I am very comfortable with  background and experience. She brings a lot of energy and excitement to our program and I look forward to  working with her.”
