Fresno Pacific Women Lead at PCSC Championships after Day 1

LA MIRADA, Calif. — The 2019 PCSC Championships kicked off on Wednesday at Splash! Regional Aquatics Center with eight events, including 1-meter diving and two relays. Following the first day of action, Fresno Pacific leads the women’s pack while UC Santa Cruz sits atop the men’s standings with three days left before the champions are crowned.

Team Recaps

The Sunbirds’ Luisa Roderweis opened the meet with a strong showing in the 1,000 freestyle, claiming the title with a 15-second victory over East Bay’s Peyton Wayment and Pepperdine’s Khloe McCarthy.

Alaska-Fairbanks kicked off the relay portion of the meet with its first PCSC title since 2015 as Erika Kakazu, Kaia Norbye, Oda Bygdnes and Whitney McArthur out-touched FPU in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.89. Fresno Pacific’s Shelbi Hayzlett, Olga Tovstogan, Cara Le and Arianne Kooijinga took second (1:44.94), while the Pioneers claimed their first podium spot of the meet as Vivy Hua, Rebecca Bay, Victoria Zukeran and Allie Klinger finished third (1:45.19).

The 800 free relay capped the women’s finals on Day 1 and saw Azusa Pacific take its first title of the meet as Elodie Poo Cheong, Riley Smith, Abby Wiet and Emily Rigsby teamed to record a six-second win over the Sunbirds’ Tovstogan, Roderweis, Morgan Coddington and Sarah Anderson. Pepperdine earned its second podium of the day with a third-place showing by Caroline Boone, Sammie Slater, Olivia Kayye and Paige Brackett.

On the men’s side, Concordia’s Taylor Steffen opened action with an eight-second victory in the 1,000 freestyle (9:31.09). FPU’s Christian Meyer claimed second (9:39.29) and the Slugs’ Aaron Wood (10:05.31) grabbed third. UCSC’s Sean Hoang, Colin Boblet, Jacob Roa and Mitchell Victoria helped rack up the points for Santa Cruz, finishing in fourth, sixth, ninth and 10th, respectively.

The Sunbirds collected their first men’s title of the meet in the 200 medley relay as Iskender Baslakov, Matheus Miquito, Kyle Jones and Dmitry Belolipetskiy won in 1:29.87. UCSC took second in 1:35.48 and Concordia claimed third to round out the podium spots in the event.

The men wrapped things up with the Eagles taking their first relay title of the meet as Kobe Gall, Austin Barton, Steffen and Kyle Benjamin winning the 800 free relay. FPU’s Jones, Trey McDaniel, Zach Peltzer and Gavin Souttere took second and Biola claimed its first podium of the meet as Clayton Owens, Andrew Holmes, Jonathan Villa and Westin Dawe teamed to finish third.

Day 2 of the championship meet will feature four swimming events each for the men and women, with the divers taking a day off ahead of Friday’s 3-meter prelims and finals. Teams will compete in the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay on Thursday. Prelim​
