Maddie Strasen, who swims for Tampa Bay Aquatics and Robinson High School, has verbally committed to the University of Vermont for 2016. Strasen trains with Coach Alex Richardson at the Westchase Branch of TBAY, where she swims primarily breast, free and IM. A “B” finalist in the 100 yard breast at the 2014 Florida High School 2A Championships, Strasen has made huge strides over the past year, dropping time in all events and by significant margins. Below are her best events (with year/year time drops in parentheses):

Short course times:

  • 50 breast – 32.57 (-7 seconds)
  • 100 breast – 1:08.07 (-1.9)
  • 200 breast – 2:23.69 (-11)
  • 100 free – 55.95 (-1.3)
  • 200 free – 1:57.30 (-4)
  • 500 free – 5:12.84 (-30)
  • 200 IM – 2:16.01 (-10.6)

Long course times:

  • 100 breast – 1:20.57 (-3 seconds)
  • 200 breast – 2:51.30 (-14.3)
  • 200 free – 2:16.87 (-13.5)
  • 400 free – 4:46.85 (-39)

After their third-place finish at the 2015 America East Championships, Vermont has reloaded with a large and talented freshman class. Still, Strasen should play an important role when she first suits up for the Catamounts. Her 200 breast time as it stands today would have been right on the A/B-final bubble at conference championships; and her 100 breast and 500 free would both have scored in the B finals.
