After opening the 2017-18 season on the road at Valparaiso last weekend, the Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s swimming teams returned to Padovan Pool for the Panthers’ home opener against Lewis University on Saturday afternoon. Both squads earned victories over Lewis, as the men won 112-93 while the women won 104-101.

The Panthers recorded a combined 14 first place finishes in the meet against Lewis. Two swimmers for the Panthers were able to capture two individual first place finishes. Lauren Oostman finished touched the wall first in the 200-IM (2:14.82) and in the 100-Back (1:00.05). Scott House also touched the wall first in two events posting the top time in the 200-Free (1:46.33) and 100-Free (47.52).

The Panthers swept both the men’s and women’s 200-Medley Relay and 400-Freestyle Relay. In the 200 Medley Relay Oostman, Rachel Manderschied, Danielle Dimatteo, and Martee Grainger touched the wall at 1:51.88. Steve FishmanMatt JacobsIvan Escott, and Ethan Wallace touched the wall at 1:37.10. In the 400-Free Relay Grainger, Sarah LohmanKarleen Gernady, and Erin Farley finished first touching the wall at 3:42.55. For the men’s squad Jacobs, House, Nick Harkins, and Escott took first touching the wall at 3:10.76.

Finishing first for the women’s squad was Farley who posted the top time in the 200-Free (2:01.08). Also touching the wall first for the women’s squad was Dimatteo who took first in the 100-Fly (59.20).

For the men four swimmers secured first place in their events. Jacobs earned the top time in the 50-Free (21.85). Fishman finished first in the 200-IM (1:59.91).  Brandon Robins earned first place honors in the 100-Breast touching the wall first at 58.79.

The Eastern Illinois swimming teams will return to action on Oct. 28 at Padovan Pool as the Panthers host Western Illinois & Butler.

WOMEN: Lewis University women’s swimming faced Eastern Illinois Saturday (Oct. 14) losing to the Panthers 104-101.

One of the top performances for Lewis came from Victoria Rodriguez () came in first for the 1000 yard freestyle with 11:10.11. She also finished first in the 500 yard freestyle touching the pad in 5:30.35

Eboni McCray (Avondale, Arizona/Agua Fria High School) finished first in the 50 yard freestyle with 24.63. McCray also took first in the 100 yard freestyle with 54.61.

In the 100 yard butterfly Hannah Zuercher (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) won the event with a final time of 1:11.23.

The next meet for the Flyers will be October 21 against Grand Valley State.

MEN: Lewis University men’s swimming went head-to-head with Eastern Illinois Saturday (Oct. 14) losing on the road 112-93.

Lewis won a few events for the meet the first coming from Adam Tapia (Clearwater, FL/Tarpon Springs High) who took first in the 1000 yard freestyle with 10:04.19. Tapia also placed first in the 500 yard freestyle with 4:51.70.

Colin Williams (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) came in first for the 100 yard butterfly finishing in 51.60.

In the 100 yard backstroke Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/Svenborg Gymnasium) placed first with 52.88.

The Flyers will travel to Allendale, Michigan October 21 to face Grand Valley State for their next meet.
