Division II McKendree University Gains 2023 Commitment From Victoria Maki

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Victoria Maki has announced her commitment to NCAA Division II McKendree University for the fall of 2023.

“The team atmosphere was something I never imagined a team could offer. I knew it was my team from the second I met them,” Maki said.

Maki is from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania and is a senior at Downingtown East High School. She also competes for the  Westtown Aquatic Club, she specializes in the sprint freestyle and backstroke events. At the 2022 PIAA District I Girls Championship last February, Maki finished 11th in the 200 freestyle (1:57.02) and 15th in the 100 freestyle (53.09). Her time in the 100 free was a new personal best in that event.

Best Times SCY:

  • 50 freestyle – 24.72
  • 100 freestyle – 53.09
  • 200 freestyle – 1:55.32
  • 100 backstroke -58.97
  • 200 backstroke – 2:09.35

With her best times, Maki will fall right in the middle of a strong sprint freestyle group at McKendree. Her time in the 50 freestyle would rank her 7th on the roster this season, making her one of 6 swimmers on the team in the 24-second range. In addition, her best time in the 100 freestyle would rank 8th on the roster and her time in the 200 freestyle would rank 6th on the roster. Given her rankings in all three events, she also has the potential to contribute on McKendree’s 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relays.

At the conference level, Maki is just out of scoring range in all three of her best events. She would have made the non-scoring C-final of the 200 freestyle at the 2022 GLVC Championships, just coming off of the time required to score in the B-final (1:54.66). In addition, she would have come just shy of making the finals of the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, where it took a 24.23 and 52.91, respectively, to make it back for a second swim.

The McKendree women finished 4th out of 9 teams at the 2022 GLVC Championships, scoring a total of 972 points. The team’s top performer in the sprint freestyle events was freshman Karley Sonnenberg, who finished 2nd in the 50 freestyle (22.90) and 3rd in the 100 freestyle (50.25).

With her commitment, Maki is set to join Helena Kurtz in McKendree’s class of 2027. Kurtz is also a strong sprint freestyle prospect with times of 24.16 in the 50 freestyle and 52.86 in the 100 freestyle.
