2024 Speedo Spring Sectionals – Christiansburg, Virginia

The 2024 Speedo Spring Sectionals meet in Christiansburg, Virginia is one of the smallest of the five Sectionals meets happening around the country this weekend, with many teams in the Virginia and mid-Atlantic area attending NCSAs instead.

The event opened on Thursday with a pair of distance races: the girls’ 1000 free and the boys’ 1650 free with both winners coming from the small state of Delaware (population about 1 million).

In the girls’ race, 17-year-old Isabella Caraballo from the Wilmington Aquatic Club won in 10:24.31, improving her lifetime best by four-and-a-half seconds.

Caraballo won by being the only swimmer of the top six to improve her seed time. Her previous best time was done in December, and most of the drop came early in the race. She was two seconds ahead at the 100 yard mark, three seconds ahead at the 200 yard mark, more than four seconds ahead at the 300 yard mark, and five seconds ahead at the 400 yard mark.

While she gave a little bit back at the end of the race, she still held on to her pace fairly well.

Caraballo is a high school senior committed to Cleveland State, where sophomore Madison Tasker led the team this season in the 1000 free in 10:22.

In the boys’ race, Conner Verbanas from the Delaware Swim Team won in 16:03.72. That’s just-over a two second improvement on his previous lifetime best in the event.

15-year-old Alexander Barone from Charles River Aquatics was 2nd in 16:09.25.
