DAVIDSON – Eighteen event wins and a team-score sweep highlighted Davidson’s meet with Old Dominion Saturday afternoon in Cannon Pool.

The Davidson women won 10 events en route to a 152-53 victory, while the Wildcat men earned a 118-87 win.

“This was a good day for the Cats,” said coach John Young. “They’ve been training hard, but still managed a number of highlights and season-bests. Really important for us, our energy was great today. The divers kicked the day off with performances worth cheering about, and the Cats kept that up.”

Wildcats Anna NewmanSylvia Stewart-Bates and Martha Tripsa won multiple events for the women, while Dylan Felt won twice for the men.

Newman won the 100 breast (1:05.42) and the 200 IM (2:08.09), while Stewart-Bates swam first in the 500 free (5:10.93) and 1,000 free (10:30.27). Tripsa was first in the 50 free (24.44) and 100 free (53.73).

“On the women’s side, I was impressed by and pleased with the balance we saw throughout the lineup,” said Young. “Lots of battling for places, and the score reflects that. When the women opened 1-2 on the relay, and 1-2-3’d the 1000 and the 200 to kick off a five-event winning streak, we knew they’d have some momentum on the day.”

In the men’s meet, Felt won the 1,000 in a Cannon Pool record of 9:14.05 and took the 500 in 4:35.01. The 200 medley relay of Jeremy KempAndrew SchouMiles Charles and Guil Ware touched first in 1:31.63, while Felt, Ben McClainMitch McClain and Zain Butt closed the day with a win in the 400 free relay (3:06.96).

In diving exhibitions, Ben Cutforth (1M, 277.43) and James Gourlay (3M, 289.20) had the top scores.

“On the men’s side, we traded some impressive punches with ODU,” said Young. “The ‘Cats were tough, clawed out a few more event wins and grabbed both relays, and we got by even without all the points the divers scored.”
