Czerniak Marks Top-10 Time In 100 Fly on Day 3 in Poland

The biggest swim on the men’s side was in the 100 fly, where Konrad Czerniak posted the 10th-fastest time in the world of 52.56. The runner-up in the race was Marcin Babuchowski in 53.84, ahead of Florida Gator swimmer Marcin Cieslak in 3rd in 54.22. For Cieslak, this is a disappointing result, as he’s already swum a 53.08 already this year at the Namesnik Ann Arbor Grand Prix.

For the women, the highlight of the session was a new National Record by Aleksandra Urbanczyk in the 50 back. Between prelims and finals, she lowered her own year-old National Record from its previous mark of 28.90 to 28.74 (which was her finals time). Unfortunately, that is still not a World Championships automatic qualifying time.

In the women’s 100 fly, 27-year old Otylia Jedrzejczak, the nation’s most popular female swimmer, won in 59.91. That misses the FINA World Championship Qualifying Time, but is a consideration time. Given that she’s already qualified in the 200 fly, she’ll probably also swim this 100 at World’s.

The only other World Championship automatic qualifiers on the day were Slawomir Kuczko in the men’s 200 breast with a winning time of 2:13.68; and Cal swimmer Marcin Tarczynski in 2:01.31 in the 200 IM. He bested fellow NCAA swimmer, and member of Poland’s elite “Marcin” club, Marcin Cieslak (2:01.74). For Cieslak, this is the 2nd time of the meet where he was well off of his best time, which would have earned him an automatic qualifying spot in Shanghai. It’s yet to be seen if the Polish Federation will consider his marks from April’s USA Swimming Grand Prix.

Other winners on day 3:

Krzysztof Jankiewicz took the men’s 50 back in 26.01.
Agnieszka Ostrowska in the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:29.57.
Paula Zukowska in the women’s 400 free in 4:17.85.
Pawel Korzeniowski in the men’s 400 free in 3:51.70, which ranks him in the top 30 in the world.

Marcin Cieslak swam through Polish Nationals without tapering hoping that even if he didn’t meet the standard that his swims from April would qualify him for Worlds. All indications are that he will be added to the squad for Worlds, which is the meet his training is targeting. Otherwise, the WUGs will be his likely taper meet.

Cieslak’s times from the Grand Prix do count for world champs qualifying. He achieved the Fina standards he needed, and that was his focus meet to qualify
