Cornell Picks Up Verbal from Illinois Backstroker Cody Moris

Backstroker Cody Moris of Academy Bullets Swim Club has given a verbal commitment to swim for Cornell University beginning in the fall of 2015.*

Moris is a senior at Lincoln Way Central High School in New Lenox, Illinois. His top times over the last two seasons include:

50y back: 23.91 50m back: 27.43
100y back: 51.43 100m back: 58.31
200y back: 1:52.06 200m back: 2:07.92
50y free: 22.92 20m free: 26.27
100y free: 49.55 100m free: 56.02

Moris had a breakout long course season last summer that culminated in his making three finals at 2014 NCSA Junior National Championships. He finished eighth in the 50m back (dropping 1.7 seconds off his seed time), seventh in the 100m back (-.9 from seed), and 22nd in the 200 back (-1.4). Throughout the entire season he improved 1.4 seconds in the 100m back and 4.5 in the 200.

Moris is just a tad outside of scoring position for Ivies in the 100 and 200 back, but if he makes the kind of progress in short course yards that he did in meters last summer, he’s easily a B-final qualifier.

Moris will have an excellent training group waiting for him when he arrives in Ithaca, led by current sophomore Dylan Sali who was top-8 in both the 100 and 200 back at 2014 Ivy League Championships.

*DISCLAIMER: Moris has not yet been officially accepted to Cornell. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Cornell’s Admissions Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete like Moris is for Admissions to review his transcript and SAT scores, “support (his) application for admissions in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer him acceptance into the class of 2019.
