The Colorado State Rams picked up an impressive victory over Northern Colorado on Wednesday, beating the visiting Bears 184-59 on Wednesday evening.

Senior Meg Lloyd and sophomore Kelsey Lawton each snagged a pair of swim wins, while senior Emily Williams swept the two diving events to lead the Rams.

Lawton won both the 100 and 200 freestyle swims and Lloyd impressed in her final dual at Moby Pool by winning the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM.

Williams won the 1-meter dive by 1.50 points over freshman teammate Madison Guess (252.98-251.48), and won a little more comfortably in the 3-meter dive by scoring a 247.28.

CSU (3-2 in dual meets this season) won all but two point-scoring events on the day, including both relays – the 200 medley and 200 freestyle. Rowan Hauber, Gianna Salanitro, Carmen Mand and Katie Kicklighter composed the victorious medley group, while Danielle Hippe, Haley Rowley, Karin Roh and Nina Stitt won the freestyle.

Freshman Veronica Morin won the 50 free, and sophomore Hippe won the 100 butterfly by beating her personal best by over 2 seconds, igniting a strong positive reaction from her colleagues. Senior Gabby Morley added another win for the home team, taking the 500 freestyle by over 6 seconds.

The 200 free relay also featured an admirable performance in lane 5 by the team’s four divers – Williams, Flori Witenstein, Nicole Sisco and Gess – who finished in 2:00.29.

IN THEIR WORDS…

“We were able to move a couple people around in some events, so we had some kids who don’t normally get the spotlight get it today and they took advantage of it, which is great to see. It’s great to see that because those kids gut it out and they absolutely contribute to the program, they just may not usually grab the headlines. It’s nice to see them in that position.” – Head Coach Woody Woodard’s overall thoughts on the meet

“That was a personal best by over two seconds. Hippe is loved by her teammates. She came as a walk-on from Nebraska-Omaha and she has fought all year long to get where she is, and the bottom line is that it shows. She kept dropping her best times. Her teammates wanted this for her, and she wanted it and her success definitely fires up the rest of the girls.” – Woodard on the performance by sophomore Danielle Hippe, who won the 100 butterfly by crushing her personal best time

“It definitely felt a little different. It was the last time my dad was going to watch me race, so there was a lot of pressure riding on that. I don’t think I’ve had a win since my sophomore year, so I just wanted to see what I could do and I just went for it.” – Senior Meg Lloyd on her two-win effort in her final meet at Moby Pool

CSU will have two weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Championships, Feb. 15-18, in College Station, Texas. The Rams will aim to improve upon an eighth-place league finish from last season.

Fort Collins, Colo – One final time before the Bears head off to Houston for the WAC Conference Championships, Northern Colorado Swim and Dive took on in-state rival Colorado State Wednesday in Fort Collins. It wasn’t to be for UNC, as the Bears fell 183-59.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Northern Colorado got off to a rocky start, allowing both the A and B 200-yard medley relay teams from Colorado State to hit the wall before them. UNC’s A squad managed to squeak two points out of the race, but put the team in an early hole that was tough to climb out of.

Sydney Kovar solicited her best effort for an early come back. Kovar’s 10:36.08 time in 1000-yard freestyle bested everyone, including those in the green and gold swim caps.

The Bears would have to wait three more events before seeing another podium finish, however. Leilani Herrera compiled three more points for her team, touching the wall third in the 200-yard individual medley.

Allyson Wood had a solid performance in the diving events, once again adding strong finishes to her freshman season. Wood scored north of 230 in both the 3-meter and 1-meter events, including a second place finish in the 3-meter portion.

UNC’s second victory came in the 100-yard backstroke. Valeria Mihhailova motored to a 58.45 finish, blowing everyone out of the water by almost two seconds. Mihhailova also swam the opening leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay, an event in which her team finished as runner-ups by a mere seven one hundreds of a second.

BEST PERFORMANCE
Valeria Mihhailova – Mihhailova won the 100-yard backstroke and kicked off a 200-yard freestyle relay team that narrowly lost out on a first place finish.
