San Jose State University diver Cari Reiswig set a school record in the 1-meter dive and four Spartans won multiple individual events in dual meet wins over UC Santa Cruz and Cal Lutheran University at the UC Santa Cruz Aquatics Center.

San Jose State (2-0) defeated UC Santa Cruz (2-2) and Cal Lutheran (2-2) by identical scores, 143-113. The Spartans finished 1-2-3 in each of the first 10 events and chose to exhibition swim all of competitors in the last three races.

Reiswig, a junior from Galt, Calif., scored 309.80 for her six dives on the 1-meter board breaking her own school record and easily qualifying for the 2017 NCAA Zone E Championships. Her previous best mark for 1-meter diving was 301.75 at last year’s double dual meet with UC Santa Cruz and Cal Lutheran.

“It was great to see Cari break the school record today, and I was also impressed by the improvements by all of our divers,” said San Jose State University women’s swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. Reiswig’s teammate, freshman Natasha Sondeno edged out teammate Kylie Fonseca on the 3-meter board, with a season-best 277.10 to 274.65, and barely missed the NCAA Zone Championship standard of 280.00.

Allyson Fellows in the 1650 free and 400 individual medley, Colleen Humel in the 200 free and 100 back, and Taylor Solorio in the 50 and 100 free were multiple event winners in the dual-meet scoring format. Taylor Lehr had a pair of exhibition swims in the 100 and 500 free that would have been good for first place in each event.

“I’m really happy with our performance today in both swimming and diving. We really challenged the team this week and I love how they responded,” Hopkins added.

“It was great to see the work our distance group put in today each racing the mile, 500 free 400 IM, and 800 free relay. The toughness they are developing is really going to show at the end of the season.”

The Spartans continue their dual meet portion of the season, December 21, against nationally-ranked California in Berkeley. First race is at noon.
