Budapest, Brasilia, and Baku First Three Bidders for 2019 World University Games

The FISU, the organization that is in charge of organizing the biannual World University Games, has announced three different bidders for the 2019 event: Budapest, Hungary; Brasilia, Brazil; and Baku, Azerbaijan.

These three countries have bid as of late for just about every event under the sun. Baku was recently awarded the 2015 European Games, the inaugural event in a series of Olympic-style, continental competitions planned prior to each summer Olympics. Budapest, having failed 5 times in history in bids for the Olympics, has instead turned its head toward smaller-scale events; that includes several times putting up very successful European Swimming Championship events.

Brazil will host the 2016 Summer Olympics, though that will be in its second-largest city, Rio de Janiero, as compared to Brasilia, its capital.

These multi-sport events, designed for post-secondary education students around the world, are growing in stature globally if not in the United States. There are plans to broadcast live the upcoming 2013 event, hosted in Kazan, Russia, around the world; British television has even dedicated a weekly segment to its university sports with a specific goal of marketing toward the upcoming World University Games.

The hosts for this event will be selected on November 9th, 2013. This would be the 30th Summer Universiade event.
