Another Ellesmere College Titan will make the journey across the Atlantic from the UK to swim in the NCAA. The latest leap comes from Phoebe Griffiths, who has committed to Florida State in the class of 2020.
She joins a very international class for the Seminoles. Between the men’s and women’s teams, the group includes 2 swimmers from Italy, a Hungarian, a Canadian, a Bulgarian, and now at least 2 British nationals. Griffiths joins her Ellesmere College teammate Pia Murray, who is also committed to the Seminoles in the class of 2020.
Florida State’s head coach Neal Studd is a native of the United Kingdom.
Griffiths is primarily a middle-distance freestyler who has represented her country internationally in both open water and the pool. In the pool, she raced at the 2017 European Junior Swimming Championships, where she had a high finish individually of 8th in the 800 free – swimming a time that is still her best. She also represented Great Britain that year at the European Junior Open Water Championships.
Since then, while she hasn’t dropped much times in the longer freestyle events, she’s been dropping big time in the 100 and 200 freestyles. That includes more than 2 seconds of improvement in the 200 free and almost a second in the 100 free.
Griffiths will turn 20 next year.
