In Briefs: Kearney, Wing, Novotny headed to various Halls of Fame

Nominations for various athletic Halls of Fame have begun to come out across the country the past few months. Here’s a a brief look at a few swimmers who have gotten nods:

Raymond “Bud” Kearney, Iowa High School Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Kearney swam back in the 60s, winning two state titles and breaking state records in both in 1964. At the time, he was just the twelfth person to break two Iowa state records in the same meet, and in the 50 years since, only 13 more swimmers have done so.

Kearney also swam 4 years for the Iowa Hawkeyes. More info here.

Gary Wing, Burlington High Hall of Fame

Wing was a do-everything star for Burlington High in Massachusetts, picking up come-from-behind victories in both the 100 and 200 freestyle at the state championships his senior year.

He went on to swim for Brown University and was named the team MVP in 1990. Wing is just the second male swimmer inducted into the Burlington Hall of Fame. More info here.

Joe Novotny, Bloomington High Hall of Fame

Novotny is one of six people who will be inducted into the Bloomington (IL) High Hall of Fame this year. A swimmer at Bloomington high through his graduation in 1985, Novotny went on to be an orthopedic surgeon.

He’s still an active triathlete in the area. More info here.
