For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Gavin Tran of Hershey, Pennsylvania, has announced his commitment to swim and study at the United States Naval Academy. He trains year-round with Hershey Aquatic Club and attends Hershey High School.
Tran confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam and provided the following quote:
To my family, friends, and teammates, thank you for always believing in me and having my back through everything. Your support means more than I can put into words. Coach Greg, Coach Jeff, and Coach Rick, thank you for pushing me, supporting me, and helping me grow on and off the pool deck. I wouldn’t be here without you guys. And a huge thank you to Coach Roberts, Coach Liscinsky, and Coach Brown for giving me the chance to be part of something this special. I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity and excited to take on the next chapter, ready to give it everything I’ve got. GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!
The breaststroke and IM specialist’s first major meet of the 2024–25 season was the Winter Junior Championships in Greensboro in December. His highest finish came in the 200 breast, where he logged a best time of 2:00.60 for 26th place, before taking 66th in the 100 breast (56.52), 81st in the 400 IM with a personal best of 4:00.88, and 130th in the 200 IM (1:54.15).
In March, Tran competed for his high school at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) 3A State Championships, where he finished seventh in the 100 breast with a time of 55.86. He also touched 11th in the 200 IM in 1:52.70, with both times from that meet representing his current career bests in those events.
Just a few days after the state meet, he represented his club at the NCSA Spring Championships, where he dropped time twice in the 200 breast. He produced a time of 2:00.34 in prelims before slicing two hundredths off that mark to finish eighth in the final. He also hit the wall 16th in the 100 breast (56.48), 71st in the 200 IM (1:55.13), and 44th in the 400 IM (4:02.62).
Top SCY Times:
- 100 Breaststroke: 55.42
- 200 Breaststroke: 2:00.32
- 200 IM: 1:52.70
- 400 IM: 4:00.88
Navy is led by head coach Bill Roberts, who is entering his 23rd season at the helm of the program. The team finished second to Army West Point at the 2025 Patriot League Championships, failing to earn the conference crown for the first time since 2005.
With one year left before he heads to Annapolis, Tran’s times would already be useful to the Midshipmen at the conference meet. This past season, his lifetime bests would have earned him a spot in the ‘A’ final of the 200 breast, ‘B’ final of the 100 breast, and ‘C’ final of both IM events.
On the team itself, Tran’s best times would have ranked him sixth in the 100 fly, seventh in the 200 free, eighth in the 100 free and 100 back, and 10th in the 50 free. Sophomore Juan Mora led the team in both breaststrokes with times of 52.69 and 1:55.32 last season. Fellow sophomores Coleman Yates (1:46.10) and Luca Oliva (3:51.14) were the team’s quickest IMers.
Tran joins Louis St. Petery, Will Charlton, Chase Wilkerson, Danny Lesinski, Andrew Vanas, Paul Mullen, Tyler Koepp, and Jack Kulp in Navy’s class of 2030.
