Boise State swimming and diving kicks off its 2016-17 season next Saturday (Sept. 17) at Quinn’s Pond, hosting the Fall Open Water Classic. The event, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., is open to the public and offers three different distances for participants to swim.

The event also offers the Boise community and local aquatics enthusiasts the opportunity to meet the Bronco swimming and diving team, which has helped organize and will staff the competition. The distances for the event are a 500-meter sprint, a 1-kilometer swim and a 5-kilometer swim. For the 500-meter and 1K races, there will be men’s, women’s and junior categories of competition. The 5K event is limited to swimmers age 15 and older. Swimmers under 15 years of age that wish to compete in the 5K must provide a time for the 1,500-meter or 1,650-yard freestyle events from the USA Swimming database.

“We’re looking forward to hosting this event and meeting and engaging with the Boise community,” said Boise State head coach Jeremy Kipp. “This is a great opportunity to kick off the fall for our program and get to know our community and aquatics enthusiasts. It should be a fun event and a great chance for participants to come out and be introduced to our swimmers and divers.”

The flat entry fee (regardless of distance) for participants 18-and-under is $10, and $20 for participants 19-and-older. All proceeds directly benefit the Boise State swimming and diving program and help provide the student-athletes with a world-class training experience that will allow them to best represent the Boise aquatics community. Participants may register in advance at https://connect.boisestate.edu/2016openwaterswim, or at Quinn’s Pond the day of the race via cash or check made payable to Boise State Swimming & Diving.

On race day, participants are asked to please park in the Quinn’s Pond parking lot located off of Main St., located on the south side of the pond between the pond and the Boise River. Heading west on Main, just past the Whitewater Park Blvd. intersection, the entrance will be on the right, just before crossing the river. Due to the Esther Park closure till the new year, check-in will be located on the parking lot side of the pond. Race start will be on the northside beach of the pond.
