At the 2025 ASCA World Clinic in Reno, SwimSwam caught up with Bill Dorenkott. Typically, Dorenkott is known as the head coach for the Ohio State University’s swim and dive teams. But Dorenkott also serves as the ASCA Board President, where he is looking to serve American swimming and specifically, American coaches. In a time of uncertainty for USA Swimming after just having hired a CEO who is new to swimming as a sport, Dorenkott is looking for answers to how to best serve his fellow coaches.

If it were me, and I had a long term opportunity staring me in the face, I’d be asking, “what can I do as a competitive swim coach, that cannot be done by a machine?” Perhaps my expectations would be more finely adjusted.
A machine cannot get caught up in drama.
A machine cares little about fame or fortune.
If a machine shows a bias, it can be re-programed, instantaneously.
All the technical aspects of the sport and the competitors are digitally synthesized and available just in time.
A machine can manage large diverse populations at multiple locations from just one server.
