Australian Jamie Jack Rips a 21.43 in the 50 Free at US Champs, Faster than Worlds Bronze

2025 U.S. Summer Championships

Australian Jamie Jack turned heads when he swam matching 21.63s in the 50 free prelims and finals of the event proper on Tuesday, but he lit the world afire in a time trial on Thursday afternoon.

The 22-year-old swam 21.43 in the 50 meter free, knocking his best time down by two tenths of a second.

Had Jack done that swim on a different stage, his summer would have looked very different. It would have put him 2nd behind only the Olympic and World Champion Cam McEvoy at the Australian Trials, and would have placed him ahead of American Jack Alexy for the bronze medal at the 2025 World Champions.

Jack entered the meet with a best time of 21.84 from Australia’s Trials in June, and is now the country’s 4th-fastest ever.

Australian Top-5 Performers, Men’s 50m Free

  1. Cam McEvoy (2023) – 21.06
  2. Ashley Callus (2009) – 21.19
  3. Eamonn Sullivan (2008) – 21.28
  4. Jamie Jack (2025) – 21.43
  5. James Magnusson (2013) – 21.52

The younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time World Champion Shayna Jack, the younger Jamie has really emerged as a secondary sprint threat for the Australians this week in Irvine. He’s competing this week as part of a forward-looking “B” team that didn’t qualify for the World Championships last week in Singapore.

On Thursday, he skipped prelims of the 100 free and has no other individual entries at the meet.

From Swimming Australia: “That’s why I train, that’s why I race, and that’s why I have so much desire to perform. I want to be there in Glasgow, race for Australia, and get a gold medal in the relay.”

Sounds like he still wants to swim the 100

TBH he is past his prime… so he can do whatever he wants with his life now… trying to stay relevant and in the spotlight is another thing altogether though… he needs to do something more productive with his time

21.43 or 21.63?

The former in the time trial today. The latter in the prelims and final yesterday.

About as much as I hate Megan Romano.

He shouldn’t neglect the 100 free as that relay team is looking for more depth and 47s split members

It seems he’s doing a McEvoy.

But McEvoy was an elite 100/200 freestyler for a decade.

These young sprinters just want to have a short cut.

I agree, as it’s not working out so well for Issac Cooper. Specializing in 50m is a science and art form, and would be difficult without the endurance training for the 100.

Such an ignorant take. If it was easy to just “short cut” to a 21.4 (a time that would medal at every major championship competition) everyone would do it. You can’t ignore his probably decade plus long dedication to training and development because you’re salty about not understanding forms of specialised training for particular events.

We’ll see if he repeats 21.43 in a competition.

It’s easier to swim fast 50 in a time trial because there’s no wash and no pressure. I’m pretty sure McEvoy regularly swam 21 low in trainings.

Popov swam his legendary 21.64 WR in a time trial in Moscow.

Love that the new training is working for him but I hope scratching the 100 doesn’t mean he’s becoming a 50 specialist.

50 specialists are the worst (besides Cam obv).

He’s trained by Boxall right? From what I hear about their training sessions, I don’t think he’s skimping out on the mileage like Michael Andrews does

Prior is an interesting character.

He didn’t like it when a hole in his initial comment was pointed out.
