Stop me if you’ve heard this before: a breaststroker from Alaska emerges as one of the best in the country.

Although 12-year-old Roman Olsen has a long way to go to reach the heights of Tokyo Olympic champion Lydia Jacoby, he’s quickly asserted himself as a force to be reckoned with in the boys’ 11-12 age group, coming off a standout performance earlier this month at the Savannah Cayce Southeast Alaska Regional Championships in Juneau.

Olsen, a member of the Ketchikan Killer Whales, set four lifetime bests at the meet, highlighted by his swims in the 50 and 100 breast, where he climbed the all-time rankings for 11-12 boys and set new Alaska Swimming LSC records.

In the 50 breast, Olsen clocked 28.25, knocking more than a half-second off his previous best and Alaska Swimming LSC record set last month (28.76) to climb up to 19th all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group. He also ranks 2nd in the 2025-26 season, only trailing Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Jacob Lee (28.06).

In the 100 breast, Olsen dropped more than half a second from his PB and LSC record in 1:01.80, moving him into a tie for 32nd all-time in the 11-12 age group and 3rd this season. His opening 50 in the 100 breast of 28.50 was notably not too far off his 50 breast PB.

Olsen came into the meet owning best times of 28.76 in the 50 breast and 1:02.32 in the 100 breast, both set at last month’s NCSA Spring Championships, where he won double gold.

In addition to his breaststroke swims, Olsen also set best times in the 50 free (23.81) and 200 IM (2:07.21) at the SE Alaskan Regionals, ranking him 45th and 26th in the boys’ 11-12 age group this season, respectively.

He tied the Alaska Swimming LSC record in the 50 free, matching Talon Lindquist‘s 23.81 mark set in 2012, while in the 200 IM, Olsen’s time was just shy of Lindquist’s record of 2:07.05.

Olsen also won the 200 breast in 2:24.07, just over a second shy of the 2:22.89 best time and LSC record he set one week earlier at an intrasquad meet, which ranks him 30th this season in the 11-12 age group.

Olsen also topped the 50 fly (24.56) and 400 IM (4:48.62), finishing just over two-tenths off his best time in the former and racing the event for the first time in the latter.
