“It was a hard fought win today over Grand Canyon,” head coach Rob Clayton. “Nothing came easy for us. Our depth really prevailed.  A lot of our guys really stepped up for us. Derek Brecht really stepped up and won the 200 IM when the meet was still in doubt. We have a little break now.  Our guys are really excited to compete against the top teams in the country at the Greensboro Invitational in  two weeks. It’s been a great fall dual meet schedule with conference wins over Grand Canyon and Wyoming.”

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are back in action on Nov. 11-13 at the USC Diving Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The Grand Canyon University men’s swimming and diving team lost a close battle to last year’s WAC champions, Air Force Academy, on Saturday with a final score of 161-135.

Despite falling short in the distance swims, the Lopes claimed first place in nine events overall, posting a total of 39 season best times.

Mark Nikolaev and Daniil Antipov led the swimmers with two wins each. Nikolaev shined in the 100- (49.47) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.16) while Antipov won both the 100- (49.47) and 200-yard butterfly events (1:54.33).

“I am very proud of how our guys raced today,” Head Coach Steve Schaffer said. “It is not easy to come up to 7000 feet elevation for a day to compete, but we did not shy from the challenge. They fought for every point.”

Pietro Hufnagel Toscani racked up points for the Lopes on the diving team, earning the top score in both the 1-meter (309.23) and 3-meter dive (284.78). Todd Alden finished in the number two spot in the 3-meter with a score of 275.18.

“Our divers once again played a very big role in keeping the meet close,” Schaffer continued. “They are getting better and better at every meet and I am certain they will continue to be difference makers throughout the year.”
The Lopes are back at it for the Northwestern TYR Invitational in Evanston, Ill. beginning Friday, Nov. 18 – Sunday, Nov. 20.
