2026 NCAA Division II Championship: Day 5 Ups/Downs, Drury and Tampa Still Battling

2026 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Down” to B finalists.

These predictions do not include the 1650 free, diving, or relays

There is just one session remaining at the 2026 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, and while the Nova Southeastern women seem to have secured their 4th straight title, pending tonight’s diving and relay results, the men’s race is still completely up in the air.

The Drury men had a very strong morning and picked up five total ‘A’ finalists, which is the same amount as Tampa, not counting the 1650 free.

Drury had better finishes in prelims, and are projected to outscore Tampa 92 to 75 tonight. With the number of ups/down, though, Tampa could make up that ground. Tampa also has the favorite to win the men’s mile, which is not included in these up/down projections with Jacob Hamlin.
