Day 4 Heat Sheet
With athletes allowed to over enter events, there were bound to be some high-profile scratches, but on the face of it, it seems a little shocking that two out of the three women’s events this morning have lost their top seeds.
Stanford Senior Lucy Bell has scratched the 200 IM this morning. Bell finished 6th in this event last year at NCAAs, where she went a PB of 1:52.47. Less than three weeks ago, the Colorado native went 1:52.50 in a dual meet against Cal, so she appears to be in great shape, but the Stanford coaching staff has instead opted to likely have her swim the 400 IM, where she is the #2 seed, and the 100/200 breast, where she is the top seed.
Bell’s departure makes a little more sense when you see that the defending NCAA champion, Torri Huske, has decided to remain in the event. Huske, who claimed both the title ACC and NCAA title last season, was the top seed in this morning’s 50 free, but has scratched that race to concentrate on this one, where she is the 7th seed (1:55.13). Stanford will have to rely upon Huske and #11 seed sophomore Emily Thompson to score points in this event as #8 Caroline Bricker has also scratched this event.
In fact, Bricker has scratched both of her events this morning, as she was the #11 seed in the 500 free. Bricker’s name still appears on the psych sheet in the 400 IM, 200 Fly and 200 Breast. Bricker was not the lone swimmer entered highly in both the 500 free and 200 IM this morning as the 200 IM #4 seed Aimme Canny has also scratched, instead opting to defend her #1 seed in the 500 free.
The men’s events were not as chaotic as the women’s but still saw a fair share of high profile scratches. Louisville sophomore Gregg Enoch has decided to trade his 8th seed in the 200 IM for his #12 seed in the 500 free. His times this season are both under the NCAA time, but both have yet to hit the Invite time. The 5th seed in the 50 free, Kaii Winkler, has opted for a morning off, as he has pulled out of the splash and dash. The Sophomore still has one event to drop as his name still appears in the 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back and 100 free lists.
UVA’s Maximus Williamson was the 11th seed in the 50 free, but will turn his focus to the 200 IM, where he is the top seed courtesy of his 1:41.61. He wasn’t the lone Cavalier to scratch the 50 free as teammates Claire Curzan and Melissa Nwakalor have both dropped the event. Curzan, seeded 5th, is the top seed in the 100/200 back as well as in the 200 fly, in addition to be entered in the 100 fly (2nd), 200 free (7th) and 100 free (5th). Nwakalor was also seeded well in the 100 free (16th), but appears to have scratched that event, likely as UVA needed to get its roster down to the necessary size.
