Rex Maurer Swims 8:37.19 1000 Free During Texas vs Texas A&M Dual, #7 Performance All-Time

Rex Maurer swam to the #7 performance all-time in the men’s short course yards 1000 free during Friday afternoon’s dual meet at Texas A&M. Maurer posted a 8:37.19 in his win. He negative split the race, going out in a 4:20.72 on the 1st 500 and coming home in a 4:16.47 on the 2nd 500.

His swim also was a pool record at Texas A&M. The previous pool record stood at a 8:44.11, set back in 2001  by Michigan’s Chris Thompson. Thompson notably represented the US at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

The swim marked a four second lifetime best for the Texas junior as Maurer came into the day with a best time of a 8:41.23 that he swam a year ago during the Texas dual against Texas A&M. That had sat as the #20 performance before today.

Maurer currently sits at #2 in the NCAA this season as Ahmed Jaouadi of Florida swam to a 8:36.65 during the Florida and Georgia dual meet back in October.

Maurer holds the American record in the 500 free as he swam a 4:04.45 during midseason in November 2024 in the middle of his sophomore season. He went on to win the NCAA title in the 500 free in a 4:05.35 and also won an NCAA title in the 400 IM.

And Hurst split 4:45 – 4:40 for a 5-second PR.
Splits for Cox are messed up but it looks like she was 2 seconds BEHIND Hurst at 600 and won by 2 seconds, which would mean she negative split it even harder.

Hurst moves up to 4th in nation, ahead of Grimes & Dobson & PB. Cox’s splits are messed up, but it appears Hurst may have been leading race until deep. Any onsite confirmation?

No. Cox was ahead by 300 and just minor gain each 50 after that.
