The 2025 Swim Wales Winter Championships kicked off yesterday, with the meet taking place at Wales National Pool, Swansea International Sports Village.
20-year-old Tyler Melbourne-Smith continued his winning ways from the recent Swim England Winter Championships, topping the men’s 200m free and 800m free podiums over the first two days.
In the former, the Loughborough ace clocked a time of 1:47.46 to represent one of three sub-1:50 swimmers.
Behind him were Freddie Ashley-Sparks and Dan Jones, who earned the minor medals. Ashley-Sparks hit 1:48.85 and Jones logged 1:49.52.
On day two’s 800m free final, Melbourne-Smith produced a time of 7:58.90 to hold off open water Olympian Hector Pardoe,
24-year-old Pardoe settled for silver in 7:59.79 while Thomas Trebilock rounded out the podium in 8:08.76.
Melborne-Smith notched a new personal best and British national record of 7:33.56 in the short-course version of the 800m free at the Swim England Winter Championships.
His result in this LCM edition was just a hair off his best-ever outing of 7:58.68 from this year’s Aquatics GB Championships to rank as GBR’s 13th-fastest man in history.
25-year-old Lewis Fraser was another multi-event winner, with the Swansea swimmer topping the men’s 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly podiums.
He turned in a time of 27.98 to take the breast and 23.66 to earn gold in the fly.
Fraser represents the 3rd-swiftest British men’s 50m butterfly performer of all time, owning a PB of 23.26 from last year’s French Championships.
On the women’s side, 16-year-old Theodora Taylor made her way to the top of the podium across a trio of events through days one and two.
The European Junior Championships medalist first collected gold in the 50m breast, producing an effort of 31.64.
That represented the sole time of the field under the 32-second barrier, with Amy Crowley next to the wall in 32.03 followed closely by bronze medalist Amelia Riggott who touched in 32.05.
In the 100m free, Taylor stopped the clock at 54.88 to beat the pack by nearly a second.
Opening in 26.42 and closing in 28.46, Taylor beat out Aimee Monks, who hit 55.79 for silver and Medi Harris, who bagged the bronze in 56.08.
Finally, Taylor was too quick to catch in the 50m fly where she posted a result of 27.23 as the victor.
21-year-old Rebecca De Torres secured runner-up status in 27.65 and Ciara Morris‘ time of 28.03 captured a 3rd-place finish.
Taylor’s personal bests remain at 31.23 in the 50m breast, 54.20 in the 100m free and 26.99 in the 50m fly.
The teen raced at the Swim England National County Championships in October, where she established new short course meters personal bests of 53.09 in the 100m free and 1:05.85 in the 100m breaststroke.

Good to see Medi Harris back racing. Does anyone know where she’s training these days?
Harris has gone back with Adam Baker, training again at Swansea.
Great to see her back racing and performing solidly. Hopefully back to her best, or better by LA.
Good to see Medi Harris back. Some work to do it seems, but she’s been away a while.
