Scoring Out NCAAs After Midseason Invites: Women’s Edition

Now that the midseason invitational meets have wrapped up in the NCAA, it’s time for a pre-Christmas check-in to see how things stand as we prepare for the winter semester and a fast and furious few months to kick off 2026 before the real show begins in March.

Below, we’ve outlined how a theoretical Women’s NCAA Championship would be scored based on times produced so far this season, without diving, using data from the Swimulator, which you can find here.

Note that the Swimulator scores out a meet as if it were a timed final (unless there’s a tie for 16th). If two swimmers tie for 8th, they’ll both get 10 points when, in reality, there would be a swim-off to see who would go to the ‘A’ final and get a minimum of 11, and who would be relegated to the consols and get a maximum of nine. In cases where swimmers tie for 16th, the Swimulator awards them both one point (rather than each getting half), when in reality, there would be a swim-off to see who would head to the ‘B’ final to earn that point (or more).

It’s also important to note that the Swimulator auto selects the three optimal events for each swimmer, and that may not be what they end up swimming at the actual meet. For example, Claire Curzan is swimming the 100 fly in addition to both backstrokes in this scenario, when in reality she’s likely to race the 50 free as her #3 event.

As expected, the five-time defending champions from Virginia are still the top team in the nation despite suffering some major losses in the offseason, sitting with 522.5 projected points in a theoretical championship meet without an 800 free relay.

Stanford and Texas rank 2nd and 3rd, mirroring their finish at last season’s NCAAs, while the biggest mover is Michigan, which jumps up to 4th after it was a distant 9th last season.

The Wolverines, who scored 195 swimming points at the 2025 NCAAs, are projected to score 321.5 based on times produced so far this season, with the addition of Bella Sims being the biggest difference, as the Florida transfer scores 53 points on paper based on the current seasonal rankings. Hannah Bellard and Letitia Sim, who combined for 27 individual points at the 2025 NCAAs, more than double their cumulative total, up to 67 combined points this season, while Brady Kendall is another name who has improved significantly, up to 25.5 points after scoring just nine last year.

Like Virginia, Michigan is also missing an 800 free relay time.

Tennessee and Florida, 5th and 6th last year, fall to 9th and 10th in the midseason rankings, with both having suffered some key losses in the offseason: Josephine Fuller and Mona McSharry for the Vols, and Sims, Emma Weyant and Mabel Zavaros for the Gators.

LSU, which placed 22nd at NCAAs last season and didn’t score any individual swimming points, moves up to 15th on paper so far this season with both Sofia Sartori and Giulia Zambelli projected to hit double-digit points.

Are we sleeping on UCLA?! Bruins are missing some big points from their invite meet- 1:54.8 200 IM (11), 4:06 400 IM (6), 800 FR Relay would be top 16.

Another note for scoring – the Swimulator simply uses a team’s fastest relay time for each entry. It does not take into account the 7 event total, 3 individual event limit which in practice means most of the best swimmers are only in 4 relays max, not 5. A team with top-end talent but limited depth might suffer more with scoring at NCAAs than what is simulated here. Conversely, a team with a lot of depth would tend to score better overall in the relays at NCAAs vs Swimulator.

The fight for the 5th place spot is going to be pretty interesting.

Indiana looks to be in a fairly strong position to move up a bit once diving is figured in and Alex Shackell joins next month. Perhaps Swimswam could run her current times and mention how that would shift it. (Like just a comment)

Just add maybe 50-70 points (individual and relay bump) to them. Probably puts them at 5th but she doesn’t add enough to get them to Michigan’s point range.

Right now is UVA/Texas/Stanford in their own tier.
Michigan in their own second tier
Whole bunch of schools (including IU) fighting for those 5-10 spots.

when you look at the quality of the swimmers 9-16 on these event lists, it is unbelievable that NCAA and ESPN+
are denying them a second evening swim!
they will have earned the recognition and excitement to swim B finals in front of their teams, families, and fans!

Michigan also doesn’t have a 800 free relay entry. Their best relay might put them level with Texas, but with diving factored in they still have their work cut out to finish in the top 3. Great first half for them, regardless!

Texas did not have Gemmell for their mid-season invite because of her injury. I still think they have the depth to finish 2nd at NCAAs.

Monty Python scoring (“there is NOOOO 7th place”) and a tie for 9th with different point totals??? Truly an imaginary meet for the record book.
