The 2025 European Short Course Championships concluded last night in Lublin, Poland, which means we now have a complete swimming medal table.
A total of 21 nations earned at least one piece of hardware over the course of the six-day competition, with the country of Italy leading the way with 20 medals in all.
The Italians amassed 9 golds, 5 silver and 6 bronze to set themselves apart from the field.
The Netherlands were leading the medal table through day five but were overtaken by Italy to be rendered runners-up. The Dutch ended their campaign with 13 medals, including 7 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze.
Great Britain finished in 3rd place in the medal table while Germany and Ireland wrangled up the 4th and 5th slots.
Remarkably, Italy captured an incredible 10 medals on the final night of competition alone.
19-year-old Sara Curtis won gold in the women’s 50m backstroke with Fransesco Lazzari following up with bronze in the men’s edition.
Two Italian swimmers landed on the podium in the men’s 50m breaststroke, with Simone Cerasuolo grabbing gold and Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi bringing home the bronze.
Curtis was back in the pool for the women’s 50m freestyle where she earned co-silver with Beryl Gastaldello of France.
Anita Gastaldelli produced a swim good enough for bronze in the women’s 200m fly while Simona Quadarella gave Italy the gold in the 1500m free.
The final individual gold came in the men’s 400m IM where Alberto Razzetti displayed a dominant performance.
On the relay front, Italy’s women’s 4x50m medley bagged the bronze as the men’s version upgraded to gold.
Great Britain was the overall swimming medal table winners two years ago in Otopeni, Romania, so they were relegated down a slot this time around.
France placed 3rd in 2023 but fell to 9th place this year, while Sweden had the biggest drop between the two editions of the competition, having placed 5th in 2023 and only 16th here in Poland.
A standout winner in 2025 was Croatia, the nation that didn’t even register on 2023’s medal table yet placed 13th at this year’s meet. The nation’s men’s 4x50m free earned bronze as Jere Hribar snagged silver in the men’s 100m free and gold in the men’s 50m freestyle contest.
