Akron Women and Cornell Men Lead Zippy Invite After Day 2

AKRON, Ohio — Akron delivered a strong second day at the Zippy Invitational on Friday, highlighted by an event win, multiple top-three finishes and depth across finals.

The Zips maintained their first-place status with 684 points after the second day. Cornell is second with 653 points and Buffalo is in third with 649 points.

Helena Lalkovic opened the night with a runner-up finish in the women’s 500 freestyle, clocking 4:52.49 to lead three Zips in the A final. Elle Couture followed in third in 4:53.03, and Maggie Patterson placed sixth in 4:56.81. Ava Withey added a win in the B final with a 4:57.05, while Nina Shulik took eighth in the C final at 5:09.31.

Avery Knight earned Akron’s lone individual victory of the evening, winning the 200 IM in 2:01.11. Claire Cox also scored in the B final, finishing fourth in 2:04.03. The Zips placed three in the C and D finals combined, led by Madelyn Bosler (2:04.75) and Efthymia Mazaraki (2:06.33).

Akron dominated the 50 freestyle with four of the top five spots. Callie Parkes won the event in 22.35, followed by Ada Szwabinska in second (22.45). Cora Spetz took third in 23.08, and Hannah Trainer finished fourth in 23.22. Brienne Trumpower added an eighth-place finish in 23.60. Addy Soehnlen also swam in the D final, taking sixth in 24.24.

In 3-meter diving, Elizabeth Noble placed third with 276.20 points.

Akron closed the night with a convincing win in the 400 medley relay. Abbey Cronin, Cox, Parkes and Szwabińska combined for a 3:36.20 finish, touching more than five seconds clear of the field.

AKRON, OHIO –  The Cornell men’s swimming and diving team finished day two of the Zippy Invitational in first place with 788 points. Day two was highlighted by a sweep of the top five places in the 500-yard freestyle and five finalists in the 200-yard individual medley.

Cornell produced one of the meet’s signature results in the 500 free, where senior Pietro Ubertalli claimed the event title in 4:23.82. He was followed by Julian Correa (4:27.62), freshman Duke Garvin (4:29.51), Owen Dankert (4:32.27), and Jacques Grove (4:33.25), completing a sweep of the top five finishing positions. The Big Red added another major scoring surge in the 200 IM, placing five swimmers in the championship final, led by Gabe Anagnoson in third (1:46.20), Haihan Xu in fourth (1:47.03), Clay Caputo in fifth (1:47.25), Will Chen in sixth (1:47.38), and Phillip Osadsky in seventh (1:47.40).

Cornell continued to produce in the sprint events, with sophomore Josh Toothman placing third in the 50 free (19.92) and senior Daniel Simoes finishing fourth (19.94). The Big Red closed the night with a third-place result in the 400-yard medley relay, as Blake Conway, Xu, Simoes, and Grove combined for a 3:13.29.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday as the Zippy Invitational reaches its final two days of competition.

AKRON, OHIO – The Cornell women’s swimming and diving team finished day two of the Zippy Invitational with 653 points which holds the Big Red in second place. Day two was highlighted by a dominant showing in the 200-yard individual medley and multiple top-eight finishes across the program.

Cornell excelled in the 200 IM, placing five swimmers inside the top seven of the championship final. Aly Yokoyama led the way with a runner-up finish in 2:00.32, followed by strong scoring performances from Oceane Vanlinthout (fourth), Katie Yee (fifth), Katherine Ferreira (sixth), and Arina Vorobyeva (seventh). Earlier in the session, Cornell advanced three swimmers to the A final of the 500 free, where Erin Dehollander placed fourth in 4:56.08, with Vorobyeva seventh and senior Jungmin Yoon eighth.

The Big Red added scoring depth in the sprint events, including a finals appearance from Mingna Xu in the 50 free, where she placed fifth in 23.17. Cornell closed the evening with a standout relay performance, as the team of Yokoyama, Audrey Holden, Yee, and Rosalee Springer finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:41.57.

The No. 1 Keiser University Men’s Swimming & Diving opened the Zippy Invitational with a pool and meet record in the 200 Medley Relay on Thursday evening. On day two, two more records went down as Isaiah Aleksenko broke the school record in the 200 IM. To finish the night, the Seahawks relay team of Nicklas PedersenNoel De GeusIsaiah Aleksenko, and Jet Fuhrmann broke the NAIA, pool, and meet record in the 400 Medley Relay.
