Taking the win by a single hundredth, Noe Ponti claimed his second European title of the week as he won the men’s 100 IM in a brand new Championship Record of 50.52. Peter Mankoc‘s previous mark of 50.76 had stood since 2009, when he broke the World Record in the semi-finals before falling to 3rd in the final.
Ponti was out slightly slower than the previous record, hitting halfway in 22.81 compared to Mankoc’s 22.66. However, the Swiss swimmer came home nearly four tenths of a second faster.
His time tonight was just 0.19 seconds off his Swiss record of 50.33, which ranks him as the #4 swimmer in history. He was out in 22.83 in that swim, nearly identical to tonight.

| 100 | 28.10 (50.76) | 12.30 (50.33) | 13.49 (50.52) |
He did hit the final turn tonight in exactly the same time as in that swim 12 months, but couldn’t quite close with the same speed. He did still manage to hold off Maxime Grousset, who, according to the official results, split a scarcely-believable 26.58 on the second half of the race, the fastest in history.
Sadly for record book aficionados, Grousset’s time at halfway was clearly from the point his feet touched the way rather than his hand. He did still have one of the fastest breaststroke splits in the field, making up half a bodylength on Ponti heading into the freestyle.
At the end of the race the pair were separated by a single hundredth, with Ponti’s underwater skills off the final turn a key reason for his victory. Both swimmers cracked Mankoc’s precious Championship Record.
Grousset also knocked 0.03 seconds off his weeks-old best in the event, breaking a tie with Hubert Kos for #6 all-time.
