For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Alyse Block has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Alabama, beginning next fall. Block confirmed the decision in an email to SwimSwam, writing:

I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic swimming career at t he University of Alabama. I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for helping me throughout this journey. I especially want to thank my mom for always supporting me and making all of my dreams come true. Thank you to Coach Mike and Coach Andy and the rest of the Alabama coaching staff for giving me this opportunity!! On to the next! Roll Tide!

The future Crimson Tide swimmer is from Oregon, Wisconsin, where she attends Oregon High School and trains year-round with the Verona Area Swim Team. She’s a versatile sprinter, strong across the 50-200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 100 backstroke.

The 2024-25 season saw her make some big strides in the pool, particularly in the 100 back, where she dropped from 1:01.11 to 54.37. She also improved slightly in her other top events, dropping from 23.28 to 23.26 in the 50 free, 55.81 to 55.75 in the 100 fly, 2:02.95 to 2:02.89 in the 200 IM, and 1:49.80 to 1:49.49 in the 200 free.

Block’s target meet of the high school season was the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division I State Championships in November. She picked up silver in the 200 IM (2:02.89) and bronze in the 100 free (50.81). Her time in the 200 IM sliced six hundredths off her prior best from January 2023, while her 100 free fell short of the 50.18 she posted for silver in 2023, when she swam the 50 free (23.28) instead of the 200 IM.

A month later, she lined up behind the blocks at the Winter Junior Championships, taking on the 500-200 free, 100 back, and 200 IM. Her best finish came in the 100 back (54.69), where she broke 55 for the first time. She also placed 49th in the 200 free (1:51.02), 59th in the 100 free (51.03), 84th in the 200 IM (2:05.12), and 96th in the 50 free (23.67).

After some extensive winter training, Block returned to the pool for the Wisconsin Senior State Championships in March, where she touched first in the 100 free with a season-best 50.45, third in the 100 back (54.99) and 200 free (1:50.74), fourth in the 50 free (23.43), and fifth in the 100 fly (55.75). Her time in the 100 fly sliced six hundredths off her best time, while her results in the freestyle events were all season bests. At the same meet a year prior, she was third in all three freestyle races and fourth in the 100 fly.

At the end of March, she closed out the short-course season at the NCSA Spring Championships. She grabbed 10th in the 50 back (25.32), an event not contested individually at the collegiate level, before slicing three tenths off her 100 back best time to clock 54.37 and secure 11th. She also placed 17th in the 50 free with a best time of 23.26, went a personal-best 1:49.49 for 18th in the 200 free, logged 25.00 for 18th in the 50 fly, and finished 30th in the 100 free with a 50.94.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Freestyle: 23.26
  • 100 Freestyle: 50.18
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:49.49
  • 100 Backstroke: 54.37
  • 100 Butterfly: 55.75
  • 200 IM: 2:02.89

The Alabama women, led by head coach Margo Geer, finished sixth at the 2025 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships before placing 15th at the NCAA Championships about a month later.

At last season’s SEC Championships, where ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals were scored, it took times of 22.40 (50 free), 48.82 (100 free), 1:46.68 (200 free), 52.92 (100 fly), 53.11 (100 back) to score in Block’s primary events.

Based on her current times, Block would have ranked fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 100 free, seventh in the 100 fly, eighth in the 200 free, and ninth in the 50 free on the team’s 2024-25 depth chart. Sophomore Cadence Vincent led the way in the sprint freestyles with times of 21.57 and 47.43, junior Emily Jones was fastest in the 100 back (50.75) and 100 fly (51.62), and junior Mackenzie Brandt (1:46.68) was the team’s quickest 200 freestyler. Block will overlap with Vincent for one year, while Jones and Brandt are slated to graduate in May.

Block joins Addison Sala, Ella Justice, Eva WhiteheadAva Grazziani, Georgia Wimberly, and Emma Bronson in the Crimson Tide’s class of 2030.
