Israeli Olympian Alexey Glivinskiy Switches Commitment from Michigan to Texas

Nearly a year ago Alexey Glivinskiy announced his decision to swim for the  University of Michigan this fall (2025), but it reported earlier this season that the Israeli Olympian and recent Worlds Semifinalist in the 200 IM, would miss the first semester due to his military commitments.

However, this morning, Glivinskiy posted on his Instagram that he has switched his commitment to swim for Bob Bowman at the University of Texas.

Glivinskiy, who turned 21 in September, is anticipating four seasons of eligibility at Texas. NCAA eligibility rules grant exceptions to the typical eligibility clocks for individuals serving military commitments. Glivinskiy had previously delayed his anticipated arrival in Ann Arbor due to compulsory military service in his native Israel.

Glivinskiy competed at the European Championships in 2025, anchoring the Israeli 400 Free relay to a 4th place finish splitting 48.44. A month later, he made his Olympic debut teaming up with Tomer Frankel, Gal Cohen Groumi and Denis Loktev to anchor the 400 Free relay. He was a little off in Paris, splitting 49.72, with the team finishing 14th overall in a time of 3:15.81.

This past summer, Glivinskiy represented his nation in Singapore in both the 200 Free and 200 IM. He finished 23rd in the freestyle, posting a time of 1:47.54, but advanced out of the prelims in the IM. The Israeli set a PB of 1:59.00 to finish 15th in prelims and moved up one spot in the semifinals, earning 14th place with a 1:59.41.

He made his first finals appearance taking on the 3rd leg of his nation’s 800 Free relay, where he split 1:47.42, after having gone 1:46.46 in prelims. Israel finished 8th in the event with a time of 7:06.76. He also led off their 400 Free relay in 48.72, but the team failed to advance, finishing 12th overall with a time of 3:13.39.

Michigan has had success recently with recruiting from Isreal as both Eitan Ben-Shitrit and Groumi were All-Americans at Michigan and were joined last season by 2025 Worlds swimmer Inbar Danziger in Ann-Arbor.

Glivinskiy’s commitment switch is a big loss for Michigan, which has been hit by a high number of absences this semester. Last week it was revealed that per head Coach Matt Bowe, both Glivinskiy and Boldizsar Magda, a Hungarian backstroker, were deferring their enrollments, likely until next fall. Michigan has also been dealing with the absences of Jack Wilkening and Jon Jontvedt, who have been both missing from meets due to injury.

If Glivinskiy joins Texas in the new year, he will be part of a class that includes a strong number of international recruits, including fellow Olympians Ksawery Masiuk (Poland) and Rafael Fente-Damers (France). If he defers enrollment until next fall, he will join the likes of Laon Kim and Noh Minkyu alongside such domestic recruits as Rowan Cox, Austin Carpenter, Andrew Maksymowski and Aiden Hammer.
