Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Juan Vallmitjana has made a verbal commitment to the University of Virginia for 2027-28. A junior at the NSU University School in Davie, Florida, Vallmitjana swims year-round with South Florida Aquatic Club and represents Spain internationally. One of the top distance freestylers in the cohort, we gave him “Honorable Mention” honors on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimmers in the high school class of 2027.
In high school swimming, Vallmitjana was runner-up in the 500 free (4:24.02) and placed 3rd in the 200 free (1:38.51), both PBs, as a sophomore at the FHSAA Class 1A State Swimming and Diving Championships last fall. So far this season, he has already hit lifetime bests in the 50 free (21.79) and 100 free (46.50).
His wheelhouse is really the 200 free and above, though, and all his best performances date from last spring’s Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships. Those include the 200 free (1:37.61), 500 free (4:22.96), 1650 Free (15:08.02), 200 back (1:51.99), 100 IM (53.64), and 200 IM (1:54.43). He won the 500 free and the mile, was runner-up in the 200 free, and placed 4th and 7th in the 200 back and 200 IM, respectively.
Vallmitjana dropped 5 seconds in the 200 free, 6.5 seconds in the 500 free, and 13 seconds in the mile in the 2024-25 season.
In LCM, where he is a Spanish age group record holder, Vallmitjana updated his times in the 50 free (25.68), 100 free (53.46), 200 free (1:52.31), 400 free (3:54.10), 800 free (7:59.66), 1500 free (15:22.39), 100 back (1:01.30), 200 back (2:10.82), 200 IM (2:09.94), and 400 IM (4:33.81) over the course of the summer. He represented Spain at the LEN European Junior Championships and came in 8th in the 1500 free final (15:29.46, but swam his PB in prelims), 13th in prelims of the 800 free (8:08.77), and 21st in prelims of the 400 free (3:58.86). He also swam the third leg (1:51.77) of Spain’s 4th-place 4×200 free relay.
Two weeks later, he competed at Ocala Futures and swam PBs in the 200 back and 200/400 IM.
He finished the summer in Irvine at TYR Pro Championships, where he was a top 8 finisher in the 400/800/1500 free and placed 14th in the 200 free. He clocked lifetime bests in all but the 1500.
Vallmitjana will join #11 Joey Campagnola, “BOTRs” Daniel Branon and William Shoesmith, and Luc Dionne in the Cavaliers’ class of 2031. The UVA men finished 8th out of 15 teams at the 2025 ACC Championships but have the #1 freshman class in the country this season. Vallmitjana’s best mile time would have scored among the top 16 at the conference meet last year. It took 1:34.41/4:20.80 to get a second swims in the 200/500.
Best SCY times:
- 1650 free – 15:08.02
- 500 free – 4:22.96
- 200 free – 1:37.61
