For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Oliver Shao from Long Island City, New York has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Michigan beginning in fall 2026.

“I am thrilled to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan. Thank you to my family, friends, and all my coaches, especially Coaches Jack, John, and Dom. And thank you to Coach Matt, Coach Aaron, and the entire coaching staff for giving me this opportunity. Go Blue”

Shao swims for Badger Swim Club and most recently competed at Summer Juniors. He swam to a 38th place finish in the 400 IM with a 4:32.00. He also competed in the 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free.

He swam numerous best times just weeks prior to Summer Juniors while attending the Senior Mets Summer Championships. His best times included a 4:04.99 in the 400 free, 8:20.44 in the 800 free, and a 4:29.86 in the 400 IM. He won the 1500 free in a 16:04.26.

Shao’s Best SCY Times Are:

  • 500 free: 4:27.11
  • 1000 free: 9:11.22
  • 1650 free: 15:16.48
  • 400 IM: 3:53.63

The Michigan men finished 2nd at the 2025 Big Ten Championships with 1148 points to finish behind Indiana who scored 1579 points. The team went on to finish 11th at 2025 NCAAs, moving up from 14th in 2024 during Matt Bowe‘s first season as head coach.

Based on his best times, Shao has the potential to make an immediate impact at the conference level. His best time in the 1650 free would have been 20th at Big Tens this past spring. The team scored 57 points in the 1650 free at Big Tens and Jon Joentvedt was the highest scorer as he was 7th in a 14:53.99. It took a 4:20.80 in the 500 free and a 3:50.47 in the 400 IM to earn a second swim.

Shao will arrive next fall as a member of the class of 2030 along with Aiden Moy and Lucas Young.
