Yes me too. They are seriously talented athletes, different talents to the pool swimmers. Yes there are some crossovers, but not all great pool swimmers will be great openwater swimmers and same in reverse. Perfect example this week when Sam Short swam to a convincing win in Aus 1500m short course Champs on Thursday (beating openwater ace, Nick Sloman by 50m) but 2 days later in a 1200m Openwater surf race it was Nick Sloman reversing the results by a similar margin. 2 very different racing situations with 2 very different results.

I hope to see Lani Pallister in the open water at some stage. She has been fantastic in surf races in Australia.

Yes that would be brilliant, not sure why it hasn’t happened already. As you say, she has been near on unbeatable in shorter surf races for some time and it just makes sense that she would stir things up in a 10km openwater race also.

Yes. And if she isn’t keen on 10k, I’m sure she’d smash a 5k. The rough and tumble would be a doddle after the surf. Something to look forward to!

I think the addition of the 3km knockout event will be the catalyst for many “pool swimmers” to have a crack at Openwater. Many would be put off the idea of a traditional Openwater race because of the massive distances that are usually associated with “Openwater”. Even a 5km is around the 1hr race, no feeds and no walls to push off. The surf races here in Australia max out at 2km, which probably appeals more to the likes of Lani and Sam Short.
