Hong Kong Olympic chief Timothy Fok Tsun-ting recently spoke about his ambition to create a world-class aquatics facility in the hopes of attracting a potential Olympic bid.
Speaking to The South China Morning Post recently, Fok compared the nation of Hong Kong to that of Singapore, specifically regarding the latter’s ability to host this year’s World Aquatics Championships.
“Like Singapore, we’re small and don’t have many facilities, but they managed it and we should be capable of doing something similar,” said Fok.
Singapore built a 4,800-seat facility in a matter of about six months, something Fok said Hong Kong should aspire to in order to bring the ‘ultimate prize’ of hosting an Olympic Games closer to fruition.
“Technology is changing; you don’t need complex structures,” Fok, speaking to the Post in his office at the SF&OC’s Olympic House headquarters, said. “Governing bodies don’t want you to build expensive facilities for one-off Games. The most important thing is creating a legacy; not having two weeks of competition, then no plan.” (SCMP)
