Season 9 of the Amazing Race Australia, which is the 3rd “Celebrity” edition, premiered on September 8th, and it featured a familiar face in swimming, retired Australian sprinter Bronte Campbell.
The season requires every pairing to have one “celebrity” contestant, and features the team racing around Asia while looking to win a grand prize of A$100,000, about USD $66,000, to be donated to a charity of their choice.
Campbell participated with her fiancé Benfield Lainchbury for her charity Carers Australia. This organization is the “national peak body representing Australia’s unpaid carers, advocating on their behalf to influence policies and services at a national level.”
Campbell and Lainchbury finished 5th on leg one and 2nd on leg two before being eliminated after finishing 11th out of 11 teams on the 3rd leg. This leg featured teams traveling to Patan Durbar Square in Nepal, filling two bowls of water from a fountain and taking those bowls to fill a bucket.
Campbell posted on Instagram after their elimination, joking about their finish and her sprint freestyle skills saying “I only do short races anyway 😂”

She joins a long line of Australian swimmers to participate in reality TV shows. Leisel Jones, Shayna Jack and Emily Seebohm were all contestants on “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!”. Jack and Seebohm have appeared on a number of other shows as well with Jack participating in SAS:Australia, and Seebohm competing in Australian Ninja Warrior and The Challenge: Australia.
Other Australian swimmers who competed on reality TV shows include Olympic medalist Shane Gould, who participated on Survivor in 2018, and James Magnussen and Stephanie Rice, who were on SAS:Australia.
Bronte was a member of four Olympic Teams for Australia, swimming the sprint freestyle and relay events. Across the Olympics, she won three gold medals, all in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay, and a bronze medal, in the mixed 4×100 medley relay in Tokyo. She also won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the 2015 World Championships.

Didn’t Bronte also do celebrity apprentice?
