Wednesday Finals Heat Sheet

And just like that, we’re nearly halfway through the 2025 U.S. Summer Championships. While many heavy hitters have gathered in Irvine, this morning featured only a few heats of each event. The limited number of competitors resulted in minimal scratches for Wednesday’s finals session.

The biggest scratch for tonight comes from Brea Aquatics’ Justina Kozan, who qualified 2nd out of the 400 free prelims. She notched a time of 4:11.43 this morning, crushing her former best time of 4:14.85 from the 2023 Speedo Grand Challenge.

The rising senior at USC swam to a new lifetime best and Polish national record in the 200 IM last night, touching the wall in first in 2:11.24. Her previous best was 2:11.55, which she swam at the 2019 World Junior Championships while representing the US.

With her scratch, Australia’s Tiana Kritzinger moves from the top seed in the ‘B’ final to lane eight in the ‘A’ heat. Kritzinger won the 1500 free last night and went 4:14.81 this morning. That time was just over three seconds shy of her 4:11.75 personal best, which would have ranked her third if replicated.

Kozan’s scratch also moves Boilermaker Aquatics’ Caitlin Hurley into the ‘B’ final. Hurley was 17th this morning in 4:23.06, which was 5.32 seconds off her best time of 4:17.74 from July 2024. The 20-year-old will be a junior at Purdue next season. She would have placed in the upper tier of the ‘B’ final if she had matched her personal best in prelims, so look for her to move up tonight if she can inch closer to her lifetime best.

Clovis Swim Club’s Rowyn Wilber also withdrew from finals of the event. She was 21st this morning at 4:27.13, off her 4:24.81 best from May. This does not affect the composition of any other heats since she was ranked last in a ‘C’ final that originally had only five swimmers. As a result, the ‘C’ final will only have four of the eight lanes occupied tonight.

Michael Faughnan of Patriot Swim Team has pulled out of the men’s 400 free ‘C’ final. The 23-year-old Iona University swimmer touched in 4:09.56 earlier today, which was a little over four seconds shy of his 4:05.41 best from the 2023 U.S. Open. Similar to the women’s event, he was part of an originally scheduled ‘C’ final that included only four people. He was ranked 20th and last into that heat, so the only change is that the heat will now have just three swimmers.

The final scratch comes in the women’s 200 breaststroke, where Clovis Swim Club’s Danielle Herrmann has opted out of the ‘C’ final. She touched 18th out of 19 swimmers, so the ‘C’ final will have two swimmers instead of three. This has no effect on the ‘A’ or ‘B’ heats. The 38-year-old logged 2:41.34, and her personal best is 2:37.43 from her Kansas swimming days in 2012.
