Ultra Swimmer of the Month: Sean Green

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

Long Island Aquatic Club’s Sean Green had a phenomenal performance last week at the U.S. Junior National Championships in Irvine, earning him Ultra Swimmer of the Month honors.

Green was a perfect five-for-five in his individual events, setting lifetime bests across the board to climb the all-time rankings in the boys’ 17-18 age group.

The 18-year-old cracked the top 10 in the all-time rankings with his swims in the 400 free (3:47.07) and 400 IM (4:15.53), sitting 8th and 9th, respectively, while dropping more than three seconds in the 400 free and more than two in the 400 IM.

His biggest improvement came in the 1500 free, where he slaughtered his previous best time by 17 and a half seconds in 15:07.49, jumping up from 71st to 16th all-time among 17-18 boys. He also broke the nine-year-old meet record of 15:16.62 set by Johannes Calloni in 2016.

Green also chipped off a half-second in the 800 free to win in 7:55.94, lowering Luka Mijatovic‘s meet record of 7:59.64 from 2023, while in the 200 free, he ran down Irvine Novaquatics’ Derek Hitchens (1:48.55) on the last 50 to claim the gold medal in a time of 1:47.97, shattering his previous best of 1:49.35.

In all five of his individual victories, Green also set new Metro Swimming LSC and LIAC club records.

He was also busy on the LIAC relays, splitting 23.70 and 23.79 on the 200 free and 200 medley relays, 51.31 and 52.92 on the 400 free and 400 medley relays, and 1:48.97 on the anchor leg of the 800 free relay to move the team up to 4th place in 7:30.82.

At the end of the meet, he was recognized as the boys’ High Point Award winner after piling up 100 individual points.

Green is set to begin his collegiate career at the University of Georgia this fall. He is currently coached by Dave Ferris and Ginny Nussbaum at LIAC.
