At Tuesday’s SAC Short Course Qualifier in Scottsdale, Arizona, incoming Ohio State freshman Ethan Reniewicki saw huge drops in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The single-day, midweek event was headlined by the sprinter smashing his best time by over half a second in the 50 (19.26), and cracking the 43 barrier for the first time in the 100 (42.93).
The Scottsdale native returned to his home pool Tuesday to compete in this annual meet, hosted by Scottsdale Aquatic Club. Coming off a strong performance at the Mount Hood Sectionals just days earlier, where he posted lifetime bests in the 50 free (22.90) and 200 free (1:50.36), Reniewicki carried that momentum into the short course pool, comfortably winning his two best events: the 50 and 100 freestyle.
An honorable mention in our June reranking of the top 20 recruits in the class of 2025, Reniewicki’s new marks give him a strong case to slip into the top 20. His 19.26 in the 50 now puts him tied with Olympians Matt King and Thomas Heilman for 18th all time among 17-18 year olds, and .59 away from Caeleb Dressel’s 18.67 from 2015. Meanwhile, his new 100 time is just outside the top 50, though he’s still a ways from fellow SAC alum Ryan Hoffer’s 41.23.
In addition, Reniewicki’s 50 time now ranks 2nd among his fellow Buckeyes in that event, while his 42.93 puts him 3rd in the 100. It’s very likely Reniewicki will be able to contribute in both the 200 and 400 free relay as early as next year, which finished in 9th and 13th, respectively, at NCAAs last spring.
Other standouts from the meet include fellow Big Ten commit Declan Kelly, who set a new PB in the 500 free, stopping the clock in 4:26.64. Nearly a full second drop, the distance specialist will prepare to carry this success to the University of Wisconsin.
Nate Malcolm, currently uncommitted in the class of 2026, saw best times in the 100 (55.13) and 200 breaststroke (1:58.83), the latter of which was his first time under two minutes in that event.

So glad the boring World Championships are over NOW lets focus on NCAA swimming which is much more exciting in the scy pool! Ya gotta love watching real athletes at NCAAs!
