Souhegan Boys Get Elusive First Title, Hanover Girls Repeat At New Hampshire Division II Meet

The Souhegan boys finally got over the hump and the Hanover girls continued their string of excellence at the New Hampshire Division II state meet in February.

After four previous runner-up finishes (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012), Souhegan finally won its first state championship. The Hanover girls defended their title from last year and won their sixth championship in eight years.

GIRLS’ RECAP 

Hanover didn’t win an individual event, but won two relays and used its depth to win going away.

The team of Elizabeth Staats, Sofia Ye, Adelaide Cesanek and Joy Cheng won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:54.43, while the team of Claire Uiterwyk, Ye, Iris Freeman and Staats captured the 400 free relay in a time of 3:50.90.

The 200 freestyle relay was won by Saint Thomas Aguinas’ team of Morgan Batchelder, Leli Quitkin, Ava Cunio and Skylar Knowlton in a time of 1:48.88.

Signed with Indiana, Knowlton was one of the individual stars of the meet. She won the 200 freestyle in a state record time of 1:49.26 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:54.85.

Souhegan freshman Izzie Gilbert and senior Keara Wilson, and Bow senior Lena Thompson also won two events each.

Gilbert won the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.01 and the 100 breaststroke in a state-record time of 1:03.72.

Wilson won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.33 and the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:00.10.

Thompson won the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 58.71 and the 100 freestyle in a personal best time of 54.43.

Oyster River junior Greta Parks won the diving with 364.40 points.

BOYS’ RECAP

Souhegan’s run to its first title was led by senior Eddie Barnes (Macalester College) who won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:51.27 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:55.61.

Barnes also swam third for Souhegan’s winning team in the 200 medley relay, which won with a a time of 1:44.46.

Riley Wilson, Thatcher Daily and Jonah Saunders were the other team members.

Wilson, a freshman, also won the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.15.

Coe-Brown sophomore Tucker Raymond and Daily, a sophomore, also won two events each.

Raymond won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:56.69 and the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 53.49, while Daily won the 100 freestyle in a personal best time of 48.62 and the 100 breaststroke in a personal best time of 1:01.50.

The Aquinas team of Sam White, Myles Reilly, Peter Latsinik and Dylan Nichols won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:37.14, and Hanover’s team of Alex Chen, Theo Cook, Miles Vogt and Gabriel Clerkin won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:31.08.

Other individual winners were Belmont senior Kyle Dumais in the 50 freestyle (22.13) and Oyster River senior River Walker in diving (255.30 points).
