Leah Hayes, Annie Lazor, Drew Kibler Highlight Psych Sheets for Indy Spring Cup

2023 Indy Spring Cup

  • IUPUI Natatorium, Indianapolis, IN
  • May 17-20, 2023
  • LCM (50 meters)
  • Psych Sheets

Some of the top swimmers in the midwest will swim in Indianapolis this upcoming weekend, a little over a month out from Trials in the same pool. In addition, some of the college programs in attendance are Indiana, Ohio State, Louisville, Kentucky, and Michigan. This is the second weekend in a row where we have seen multiple swimmers who have recently represented the US international swim at a more local club meet as last weekend many swimmers were at the Atlanta Classic.

Former World Junior Record holder in the LCM 200 IM Leah Hayes is entered in seven events in Indy. Hayes has a mix of “on” and “off” events as she swam the 200 IM at Worlds last summer for the US. She also was fourth in the 400 IM last April at US International Team Trials. Hayes most recently battled it out with Anna Peplowski in the 200 free at Pro Swim-Westmont last month. Peplowski is the second seed in the 200 free entered with a 1:59.87, her best time prior to Westmont.

Hayes’ Entries:

  • 200 free: 1:58.27 #1 seed
  • 100 breast: 1:10.49 #11 seed
  • 400 IM: 4:39.58 #1 seed
  • 200 breast: 2:29.70 #7 seed
  • 100 free: 54.89 #4 seed
  • 200 back: 2:13.61 #9 seed
  • 200 IM: 2:08.91 #1 seed

2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Annie Lazor will also be in attendance. Lazor attended the meet a year ago swimming a season best of 1:05.91. She is the meet record holder in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. She is the top seed ahead of Stanford commit Lucy Thomas in the 100 breast by over two seconds and the top seed in the 200 breast by almost five.

Lazor’s Entries:

  • 100 breast: 1:05.37, #1 seed
  • 200 breast: 2:20.84, #1 seed

2020 US Olympian Drew Kibler who moved back to train with Carmel Swim Club last September highlights the men’s side. Last summer, Kibler was only 0.03 seconds from making the podium individually in the 200 free as he finished fourth in a 1:45.01.

Kibler’s Entries:

  • 200 free: 1:45.01, #1 seed
  • 400 free: 3:52.25, #3 seed
  • 100 free: 48.25, #3 seed

Distance freestyle Charlie Clark represented the US last summer at 2022 Worlds in both the 800 and 1500 free. Clark swims at Ohio State.

Clark’s Entries:

  • 1500 free: 14:51.78, #1 seed
  • 200 free: 1:52.46, #19 seed
  • 400 free: 3:49.36, #1 seed
  • 800 free: 7:50.07, #2 seed

Making his return to swimming is Blake Pieroni who retired last August. Pieroni returned to the pool about 3-4 weeks ago and is training 4-5 times a week at Indiana. Pieroni is entered in the 50 and 100 frees.

Interested to how Alex Shackell does as she could make one of the teams for this summer

Neither Erika Brown or Natalie Hinds have impressed in the 100 FR during calendar year 2023. That’s two openings for the women’s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay.

Weitzeil
Huske
Douglass
Curzan
seem like 4 pretty safe bets for the team in the 100 free.
The remaining two look to be a battle between Hinds, Brown, C. Deloof, G. Walsh, Manuel, Smoliga, Hayes, Shackell, Moesch, Palaez, Parker, and Gemmell among others.

The only one on my team right now is Weitzeil. Huske probably. Curzan we need to see swim she didn’t taper that well in March. The rest we might as well draw straws for the other spots. Manuel should be able break 54 wish she was faster. Brown I would expect to be in the mix.

Given the status of the 100 free in the US, I don’t see Curzan not getting a relay spot. I don’t see her getting the individual swim again this summer, but Top 6 I think is quite likely.

The women’s 100 meter freestyle for USA Swimming is as weak as I have ever seen it heading into the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships.

After swimming the women’s 400 meter freestyle on Day 1 of the competition, I doubt it.

Wrong order of events. 100 is day 1 along with 800

No that’s not correct. The 400 Free for both men and women is on day 1 in both Paris and Fukuoka. The 800s are later.

I concur with the four listed as the most likely to qualify for the six available spots in the women’s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay. USA Swimming could use a bolt from the blue in the W 100 FR. Will lightning strike for the third year in a row for USA Swimming?

2021 – Jacoby, Lydia (W 100 BR)
2022 – Hayes, Leah (W 200 IM)
2023 – ?

It’s good to see Leah Hayes put the work in the breaststroke events.
