South Africa’s Michael Deans, currently attending Indian River State College, a community college in Florida, will be heading to Tuscaloosa in the fall to join the Crimson Tide.
Deans committed in the fall, and his performance at this past week’s NJCAA Championships has only increased his value for Alabama. Deans racked up 72 individual points at the Junior College Championships, winning the 100 breast in 53.64. That swim was actually just a hair off his personal best of 53.37, which he set earlier this season, at the 2021 6th Annual Spartan Invitational in late December.
Deans also won the men’s 200 breast, swimming a 1:57.65. He was 1:56.98 in prelims, a time which, again, was just off his personal best of 1:56.24, also set at the meet in December.

Dean’s breaststroke speed will provide critical depth to the Alabama breaststroke squad, which is currently led by Derek Maas. If Deans were competing on Alabama this season, he would be their #4 100 breaststroker, and #2 in the 200. At the 2022 SEC Championships, Deans’ 200 breast time would have put him squarely in the B final, while his 100 time would have been good for a C finals appearance.
